Move to FL for schooling ?

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi...I live in Sacramento CA and have already applied twice for the AS RN program...lottery selection...no luck yet and I'm running out of time, money and options. My sister lives in Florida, 30 min from Orlando and has offered for me to move there and get my RN schooling there...no lottery. I would be in by Fall 2009 working towards my RN degree at either Valencia or Seminole College. Possibly returning to CA later after I get my FL license.

Can anybody offer some advice, input, suggestions or just pros/cons to this idea ?

Thanks

i would go for it if I were you. My bestfriend left for nursing school in new york last year:crying2: but i am glad she got in a school. i live in the bay area in ca, i am scared to apply at the end fall 09 because i probably will not get in. A girl i know said it took her 3 yrs to get into a nursing program :uhoh3:

Typical and expected response. As soon as someone suggests that nurses be smart, someone calls it "elite." Go ahead, hun, fill up the ranks with the mediocre who think "C = RN." Please don't give me the hackneyed response, "I know plenty of book smart nurses who can't function at the bedside." I'll just reply with, "I know plenty of book dumb nurses who endanger patients."

Making C's in school does not show that you are stupid and making A's doesn't mean that you are smart or that you won't endanger patients. My sister flunked OB and had to repeat it. She also made C's in anatomy. She is now an ICU nurse manager (the youngest in history at her hospital) and a clinical instructor at a CC. My sister has never endangered a patient and she is well respected. Good thing that when she went to school things weren't so competitive otherwise the public might have missed out on a wonderfully caring nurse who is also smart and knows her stuff.

How do you know your sister never endangered a patient? Are you aware of every activity and every step your sister has taken? Maybe there was a time your sister should have checked a BP but didn't or overlooked an abnormal lab or all sorts of things. That's similar to a mother saying her child would never lie. I hope you're not a nurse with your level of objectivity.

I know that she has never had any problems on her floor, was promoted because she was the best they had and is continually called upon for her expertise. I've known plenty of doctors who I wouldn't want near me, my cousin for one who went to one of the top medical schools in the country and made good grades! That doesn't make him a good doctor just because he was able to pass a test. Knowing information and applying it are two different things. The true test comes when you are working in the field. I am in nursing school and I also made a C in anatomy. I took it in the summer time online while working full time, going to college at another school completing my bachelors degree and doing an internship. I managed to make A's in my other 7 classes, but I was just doing too much and I made a C. I don't feel inferior because of my C grade and I'm actually doing very well in nursing school.

Thanks for posting your resume and all of your excuses for making a C in anatomy. One thing nursing does not need is someone who can produce multiple excuses for their downfallings. Nursing needs mature, smart people who own up to their shortfallings and don't give everyone a ration of excuses.

I'm sure the original poster would appreciate the thread not derail and be highjacked into another debate. There are other threads debating the "book smarts vs. good nurse with a C-RN attitude" debate.

Thanks.

Thanks to everyone's responses and encouragement. I'm moving to Florida April 2009 to start school...I'm so excited.......:yeah:

Sounds like a great decision, enjoy Florida.
