LVN to RN Unitek: DON'T GO!

U.S.A. California

Updated:   Published

Hello to al!

I have no information as to the quality of the LVN program, just the LVN to RN program.

I am about to begin my 6 month of 9 months at the LVN to RN program at Unitek and I wanted to inform those considering them of their program.

#1 DISORGANIZATION

They have not planned clinicals out very well the entire program. We were supposed to take two days out of med surg starting two weeks ago to attend OB clinicals. Their teacher fell through, the clinical site fell through and as of today we just found out our new OB rotation, which will be three sundays in a row when we are already going to clinicals & lecture mon-fri. Among other things we have been told on several occaisions, "you have to be at this clinical site (an hour away) in two hours or on in two days for orientations."

They had known about it for weeks, why hadn't we?

Those are just a couple illustrations.

#2 LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM

Among the many things that have occurred this year at this program, various teachers have badmouthed other teachers to the students. Assitant Director of the program came in to give a lecture and ended up talking about her political views, people who "just came off the boat" and how healthcare should be available to all. The lecture was supposed to be on leadership, not her personal views.

#3 MAJORITY OF INSTRUCTORS ARE NOT PREPARED

Most of the teachers here come in with some handouts and so begins the long, droning lecture which most often is completely off the topic and have no relation to certain material we are supposed to cover. I honestly have spent most of the program reading my books, looking at my notes and seeking information elsewhere. I have done well, but those who are not good at self-study are struggling.

The cost of the program is currently around 40K and that does not include prereqs, yes you finish in 9 months, if they can get the clinical sites. But at this time I would not reccomend it, I know it is a new program. However, it is so lacking I would say for now, look elsewhere.

I would leave, but I'm already too far in and only have 13 weeks left, unless the schedule changes again...

Good luck to all.

Gosh maybe this UNorganized Khos is the norm. I went to Westmed and it was a mess. The instruction was good, I felt like i learned from the instructors (well some) but the organization was horrible. Short notice on clinical sites, canceld sites, schedule changes. But 10 months later and we were done!!! To hear that Gurnick had the same type of problems and the Unitek LVN -RN is having the same issues is horrible. I wish you all luck!

How long after completing the LVN program does it take to go into the LVN to RN stage?

its takes a year

You have to have completed all prerequisites prior to entering the RN program. And it's actually about 9 months. 3 week transition class & a little over 8 months of nursing courses.

At this point I have entered a new grad program in southern california, but have to say that I did not feel that my program adequately prepared me at all. I go home after work and study for hours every day and have gotten many looks of "you don't know that?"

Please do consider other programs as well!

Thanks for the info and input, I'm definitely looking at all schools. But another question, if one had completed all the pre-requsite courses at a JC how much time would that take off the 9 month? Like after completing the transition course, would someone be able to go into the next class that starts?
