LVN help

U.S.A. California

Published

Hello all,

I live in the Los Angeles area and was wondering if anyone knew of a 1yr LVN program with a tuition that is considerably lower than 30k.

I tried Concord and after grants and loans I still owed about 22k and I really can't get into more debt that I am in now. So far my searches and calls have yielded same results.

I heard community colleges have lower tuition but might possibly have a waiting list? Does anyone know of any good low tuition schools with short waiting lists?

Semesters are starting soon and I have to make a decision soon, thank you for your help. God bless.

Have you looked for a ROP program in your area?

What is a ROP program?

Simi Valley Adult School--$4,500 Jewish Home for the Aging's Annenberg School of Nursing-$9K and interesting loan repay by work/forgiveness, if you can go out to Santa Barbara City College, some prereq's required 3 semester LVN

ROP is Regional Occupational Center-What used to be called Vocational Education. I substitute teach @ one here in Ventura County...I think my students paid $10 for their books...to get their CNA. Best unknown deal for basic work training.

Are those schools in the LA or North Hollywood area? Although I'd be willing to drive, past 20 miles is a bit out of range.

This ROP program is interesting, I wonder if it was the same military type program when I went to highschool, I think it was called ROP too.

So let me get this straight, me a adult can enter this ROP program almost free of charge and they will supply me the same LVN education as these 30k trade schools in the same amount of time? Does this ROP program offer clinicals as well and offer you full time job placement or just entry level job placement?

How are waiting lists handled?

Sounds almost too good to be true, why haven't more students chose this path?

ROP is through School districts. Think of LA Trade teck or West Valley Occupation center. North Valley Occupation Center also has an LVN Program.

Adults pay more than High School age students but it is a lot less than the RIP off "Proprietary" schools.

You need to spend some time Googling the info I've given you here but yes, they do have the clinicals through the program.

Annenberg mentioned that they offer placement. They mentioned $20/hr for their new grads. Go check them out in Reseda. I really liked visiting their open house. New equipment, small program. Geriatric focus but rotations through other Hospitals.

You can do your own research the the California State Board of Vocational Nursing They list every LVN school accredited in the state.

It isnt too good to be true, I dont know how wait lists are handled. Call the schools that interest you and ask them.

Thx for your help Q2B, sorry I asked so many questions I don't want to seem like I don't google stuff myself. I've been using state board site as my starting point and ROP and Annenburg I just found out about and researched a general idea now.

I have to really thank you for the Annenberg information, this school is the closest thing I've been looking for, for a very long time. I do most of my research online rather than calling since I have few prepaid minutes LOL.

How was your Annenberg orientation? I see they have a entrance exam fee? Hopefully there isn't 2 entrance exams... There site says LVN tuition is pretty much the same, 30k, but the -10k discount agreement is interesting. Can you also use a pell grant to deduct?

What was the schedule of classes like? 20hr job after graduation sounds pretty good to me even tho it's a 2yr contract.

Thx again for the guidance :D

In 2007 Redlands Adult School cost 3000. You had to take two very affordable classes from them(math,Med Terminology) then you were allowed to apply to the LVN school. 18 months long. A big thing was your interview with them and what they thought of you during your classes. You had to have your CNA license first. It is a great deal with no funny stuff/strings.

They dont take PELL's right now.

I just went to the Annenberg open house, I'm not a student or grad of the program.A bunch of my CNA students were looking @ LVN programs. I was curious and wanted them to have something to compare other programs to. The open house was convenient so I went to check it out for them.

Best case; You already have your CNA, pay the $100 entrance fee, take the TEA's there (they have a free TEA's prep class) and get in. (They have interest free loans than run you about 400 month through the duration of the program) classes 8-2:30 pm. You also get 1 three day weekend a month as a "catch up" weekend. You work after school there as a CNA 3-11 pm - 24 hours a week (that many hours gives you health benefits) You pass your NCLEX and earn $20/hr and full benefits. The loan contract is pro rated in 6 month increments as far as the loan forgiveness. If you find some other job you like better, you can take it and pay off their loan from your new job. You arent "chained" to the job.

After graduation you work there 2 years while you take pre req's for RN/ @ a CC in the Valley or LA, work NOC's while in an RN bridge program, graduate from RN program and live happily ever after.

You could do the same thing only cheaper using ROP, working NOC @ a nursing home for a lot less and no loans. wait lists may be longer going "public" but still would still work.

there is Preferred college on Wilshire i believe they charge 17000

That's an awful expensive program compared to a CC or ROP program. Are they accredited?

it is expensive more than Rop programs but the least expensive ive found from private schools such as american career college which charges 34000. They are accredited in California.....if you qualify for grants the school should cost around 11000 which is still a lot but i beleive the program is only a year
