Licensure by endorsement from MO to CA

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi, I have been a nurse for 4 years in MO. I am originally from CA, but went to an accelerated BSN program in St. Louis and worked in MO until now. I have applied for my temporary and permanent CA RN by endorsement. It has been two months and I know the CA nursing board is taking a ridiculously long amount of time to process applications, however I recently received a letter from the board stating that my nursing school transcript does not include a written and oral communications class. I know that this is a pre-req for nursing schools in CA, but are they seriously requiring every RN from every other state with years of experience to take a junior college communications class to receive a CA RN? I have a BA in Sociology or University of California-Santa Cruz and of course a BSN. Has anyone else had any experience with this, and further if I am going to have to take a communications class, do they even provide a list of accepted communications classes to fulfill this requirement. Thanks.

Hi Berkeley08, I just came across this situation myself. I know this is an old post, but I would appreciate it if you could let me know what the outcome of your situation was! I am going to request transcripts from my first undergrad degree, which hopefully won't be "too old" for the CA BON. Of course they won't answer the phone to take questions... Thank you!

Hello Everyone!

I'm so happy to find this thread, as I've been panicking about the endorsement app. I'm an RN in New York, and gathering my application paperwork for my licensure by endorsement to CA.

I'm a bit confused as to what the total fee amount is? It appears on the application that it is $150.00 (for the application and fingerprint card). BUT, also stated on the application completion checklist is "Appropriate Fees", are there additional fees aside from the $150.00? On the CA BON website there is a "miscellaneous fees" tab, and listed under that tab are Certified Copy of School Transcript ($30.00), and Verification of CA RN Licensure ($60.00).

I'm so confused?

Please advise if you can, I would SO appreciate it.

every bon charges differently for verification so the $60 is if you want verification from CA BON which wouldnt apply to you. The fee is $150 if you want a temp license which lately with the delays most applicants was just issued the perm license.

Thank you Denicu, I was not even going to apply for a temp in the interim while waiting for a permanent, but now I definitely will. I'm so anxious to move to Ca.

I also had my fingerprints done today at my local precinct, and the woman who took them filled in my card info for me while I was there. However, for my eye/hair color she did not use the terms requested on the application. Like "BLU" for blue eyes (she wrote the word blue) and or "BLN" for blonde (she spelled the word blonde). I already requested another fingerprint card be sent to me, but I'm going to send off the one I have in the meantime. Do you, or anyone think that little spelling error on the fingerprint card will hold up my licensure?

I feel crazy for getting this anal, but everything I've read on all nurses reflects how picky CA is when it comes to licensure.

I really appreciate your feedback.

Thank you!

Hi! I'm another SC grad. I know this post is a little old but I was hoping you could help me. What classes did they wind up taking? I have a BS in Neuro, but took the basic English classes, etc while there. Did any of those count for communications? Just submitted my application for endorsement and am now a bit concerned about transcripts and classes.

Hi all,

Im a MA RN applying for CA endorsement (temporary and permanent). This process seems to take forever. I am getting anxious since i already live in CA and am applying for training programs/jobs. I mailed everything in March including livescan and they just processed by check on April 20th. Anyone have insight on how long from when they cash your check to when you are at least issued the temp license? I called BON today and my fingerprints cleared but she couldn't give me a status on the temp license.

I live within an hour drive from Sac... considering driving there to speak with someone in person.

Any help would be appreciated! :) Thanks!

GO TO SAC! There is a lovely lady at the desk who will take your name and look up your application. She can check to see if anything is missing and then keep you posted on what is happening. Definitely think she sped the process up by actually pulling my application out of the "pile". My check was processed on the 20th as well. She said my temp license should be posted on breeze in the next couple days.

Thanks! I am on a call back list now re: my temp license. Tomorrow will be the end of the 5-10 business days they said it would take. If i don't get it by next week I'm going to drive up to Sac to see if that will work. :)

Now they have no record of my previous calls or that I I was ever on a call back list. Beyond frustrated!

I tried to get a CA licence last year and was told I needed "Professional oral and written communication" course. I'm 60 years old, I've held a RN license in 6 states. The last 25 years I've worked in dialysis and before that ICU. This my 2nd Bachelor degree, the first was for Business Administration, I worked in management and sales for 15 years.

I have no desire to pick up additional college credit for a skill I've developed at work and college over a lifetime. In 1974 the course was called Humanities I, II and III. Sorry just needed to vent.

Hey I have a BS in Neuro from UCSC too! ha. I am trying to get my license by exam without the communication courses, so frustrating.

I'm a UCSD grad who did an out of state ABSN program. I never took communication, public speaking, speech, etc. that people usually use to satisfy the communication skills requirement for CA nursing schools. The exact wording in the California Code of Regulations is: "Communication skills, six (6) semester or nine (9) quarter units. Communication skills shall include principles of oral, written, and group communication" so that's pretty vague about what actual classes fulfill the requirement, so I decided to make a case that I'd already taken classes that included "oral, written, and group communication."

My licensure by endorsement was accepted without having to do those courses but I submitted the following in addition to my complete application:

- Letter explaining how I do not have the "stereotypical" courses used to fulfill that requirement but that I've taken X, Y, and Z classes that I think satisfy the requirement because of A, B, and C reasons. I used humanities, French language and literature, linguistics, and nursing research classes and my work in grad school where I wrote and defended a thesis and TAed undergraduate courses.

- Course descriptions for all classes I listed as potentially fulfilling the requirement.

- Letter from Revelle College at UCSD explaining that their humanities courses are considered the equivalent of a freshman writing course.
