Well the problem is that for a new grad to find a job here is very hard. Do a little research and you will find out that new grads me included are without a position sometimes a year after finishing. So if you are coming from somewhere else, you might want to think long and hard before you move here hoping you will get a job. There have been a few new grad programs that now are in the last phases of selecting applicants that were insanely competitive. So, what can I say, good luck!!!

I live in the bay area. Its difficult to find jobs now.

Getting a job as a new grad in the Bay Area is like winning the lotto--congrats to all who were able to land a job. I wish I could be you; and it's not for lack of trying.

I am a Bay Area new grad with a BSN who is so ready to fly and am getting sick and discouraged sitting in the sidelines unable to practice. I would encourage anyone who can move out of the Bay Area to do so; I wish I could but cannot as I have a mortgage and kids entrenched in local schools. I keep dropping hints to my husband that we can survive anything for a year, but after putting the family thru nursing school I cannot move away from them to chase a job without risking my marriage or my kids sanity. I feel so guilty for having put my family thru financial and emotional hardship to chase my dream....and to have nothing to show for it now.

I have spent hours filling out poorly designed computer applications to no avail. I am 7 months from graduation, 6 months from licensure. I have done a 240 hour preceptorship and 260 hour externship which have left me with strong nursing skills as well as with excellent letters of recommendation from both rotations....however both hospitals I rotated in are not hiring.

I am ACLS/PALS/BLS certified. I have a strong academic record. This is a second career for me and come to the table with work experience with a major SF corporation and life experience that comes from being a mother and helping loved ones die before their time.

I am in my early 40's and am starting to suspect that age may be what is holding me back--but I am moldable and eager to learn--wouldn't survive nursing school if this wasn't the case. I am high energy and an avid exerciser who can run circles around most 20 year olds.

I just found out last night I did not get what sounded like my dream job in Oncolgoy at UCSF. It hurts when you know you get so close and get that disappointing call. I am trying to stay positive but it's so discouraging.

I heard of another hospital in the East Bay who recieved 2000 applications for 11 new RN grad positions and who actually hired a new grad RN from out of state. I don't know if this is true but if it is I can't help but feel angry about this.

I moved away from the Bay area to get a job. And I wasn't a new grad looking for work there.

Testa Rosa, l totally agree with you. lt has been a nightmare for me to secure a job in the bay area as an LVN. l would seriously recommend someone to move out of the bay area. lt is such a nightmare to land a job here....

You've gotta look and really do your homework. Keep in touch with your classmates because chances are they may know something. The other option is just checking websites and calling HR. I've been out of school since May 2009 and I was finally able to find a job. It will take time but be patient. Finding a job is pretty much a full time job in itself!

Testa: Sorry to hear what you're going through. But I know in time all new grads will be able to find a job! Are you keeping your options open to nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities, private offices, etc? Keep your head up and best of luck to you and all new grads!

I've tried everything--offices, infusion clinics, SNFs and LTC even hospitals in far flung places. Thanks for the encouragement; I appreciate the thoughtfulness.

Yes, Looking for work is a full time job and all the wasted time on the computer and all the rejection has made me cranky.

I actually did get some good leads from my classmates. The few times I did get called it to interview, it seems I always get close. Two panel interviews and getting the vibe that they really liked me--but in the end I never get selected.

For now I think I need a break from this constant job search and rejection. I need to get back to a positive place again with regards to my profession. I need to stop taking personally the realities of no jobs in the Bay Area where I've purchased my home and raised my kids.
