Hello California nurses!

I'm currently attending a BSN program in Georgia and will gradate May 2011, and I'm trying to decide whether I should take the NCLEX in Georgia or in California. The reason I'm considering California is because my fiancé lives there and I want to move there after graduation. I know the job situation for new grad nurses is quite scary right now in California. I really am not picky about what kind of job I get, I mean I don't have to be working in a hospital, I would happily work in a clinic or office or anything like that, but I guess I just need to know what things to consider before the move, and I need to get a timeline in my head so if there is paperwork I have to process or anything like that I can make sure I get that done in time. I have already visited the California BRN website, and did not find it to be very helpful...

So any help, advice, tips, suggestions... would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can take the NCLEX anywhere. As for your initial license, it makes sense to get licensed first in the state where you intend to live and work, unless you have a sentimental reason for getting your first license in a certain state.

Thanks Caliotter for your response! I just have a question, would it matter that I graduated from a non california nursing program? I mean to ask, will there be extra hoops I have to jump through in order to register to take the NCLEX in california?

No. Just follow the instructions given on the online application.

My recommendation is to go to a state where you will have the job in hand guaranteed. California is pretty tough right now especially for us new grads! Good luck to us all!
