Anybody In Oakland

U.S.A. California

anybody live and work in oakland as i am a uk nurse and have been offered an interview ther wondering what the pay and quality of life is like:)

It's probably Summit or Alta bates. It depends on what unit you work on. I know nurses who work med-surg and ICU at both places and love it. I also have a friend who worked one shift in the ER at summit and swore she would never go back. Both hospitals are very busy, as are Kaiser-Oakland and Highland. I don't know what they pay nurses they are sponsoring for a visa. I imagine it's in the mid 40's (USD) an hour, but that is just a guess. As far as living there goes: I have lived in Oakland, and I now live in San Francisco and commute to the East Bay to work. I know several nurses from overseas who do this as well. I understand that Sutter (the corporation that runs both hospitals) often pays for a hotel in the City while you look for an apartment. Oakland has some very nice areas and some of the most dangerous neighborhoods in America. It does have a nice diversity to it, but it lacks the amenities of SF. Specifically, dining establishments that are open after 3pm. I guess Gertrude Stein was right when she said "There's no there there."

Wherever you choose to live, the Bay area is awesome. Best of luck.

I agree with mobilePN. The distance between SF and Oakalnd/Berkeley is short. You can live in Oakland or Berkeley in the East Bay and then take BART Bay Area Rapid Transit) or drive over the Bay Bridge to get into San Francisco for any nightlife, culture, etc (not to mention lots of great restaurants). Or you can live in SF and commute over to the East Bay. People commute back and forth all the time. (Depending where you live in the East Bay (say N. Oakland), it takes you 20 to 30 minutes to take BART into the city. The thing you'll find about living in the SF Bay Area is that everything is close together. Good luck.

The weather is excellent, not too hot or cold, usually sunny most times of the year. You don't have the usual fog that comes into San Francisco in the morning (but even that burns off quickly). Berkeley is diverse, there are students, professionals, etc living there (There are several universities and colleges there like U. C. Berkeley). Yes, Berkeley is a nice place to live. You can do a Google search on Berkeley, California for more info:

You'll see why people like living in the San Francisco Bay area! Enjoy! :p

If you have a chance, visit the UC Berkeley campus also. What else, you go up the mountina from the campus and there is a garden and if you keep going up, there is a science museum (and a GREAT view of the whole area).

Oh, if you visit the Berkeley campus during school season and you are in the main quad - you are going to get tons of flyers and what not when you walk through the quad because there are so many groups there stuffing you with their literature. One way to avoid it is find a big football type person and walk right behind him... real close behind him... that way, he gets all the literature instead of you.:wink2:

If you go down the quad a little, you see this "golden" bear statue that I call the "racoon" because it looks like a huge racoon without the bandit eyes.
