California's 2009 New Grad RN Program- Who's hiring right now?

U.S.A. California

Published

Greetings.

This is my story- I graduated from Nursing School in May 2008 (ADN) and passed my boards in October 2008.

I live north of San Fran and have yet to find a New Grad Program. I've been on Allnurses since last summer when I started studying to pass the boards. I used Allnurses especially the "random facts" thread which helped me pass the boards with flying colors. My family is ready to move out of the area because there is no new grad program avail out here.

I have spent hours online looking for New Grad positions in Washington State, Southern Ca, New Mexico, and Ashville NC. These are the areas, along with the Bay Area that I am interested in. I am looking to see if someone would like to buddy up or we can all help continue this thread and we can help search together for all the possible positions in the areas mentioned above or just in California. I have found that the work done alone is not enough or that I have just missed an application date, or I didn't know that blank blank just hired for the season.

The random facts thread was so hot because it was encompassing info about one main event with up to the minute info. Maybe a thread like "California's 2009 New Grad RN Program- Who's hiring right now?"- and it would include SNF's and whatever we can think of that a new nurse can do in the community, would be like the "random facts" thread. I'm sure I will hear from an Allnurses thread monitor about if this is OK or not.

At this point I am just trying to be creative and use the best resource online, which to me has been this sight.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Looking for a nursing related job this season? Work for the immunization clinic. It is a 3 months job and they don't pay as well as a RN but it is an experience. I've found Mollen immunization or Maxim immunization clinic online. They respond within a week. Heads up the orientation part is a little tedious.

Maxim will not take you unless you have one year experience....:banghead:. I even work for two other flu and wellness clinics and they still said I needed one year experience. An idiot can give shots! :banghead:

and theeir freaking schedule sucks bad! I put in more hours getting paperwork in and the orientation than the two misserable shifts they had available for one month!

if you read above...it says she was hired for mollen or maxim...I suspect these two names refer to the same immunization clinic? i was hired by mollen but didn't pick up hours as they interefere with my job at the hospital...i as looking for a part time job and thought this mollen place would be a great opportunity....but they only offer two shifts through out this month and so on....for the area where I live.

I'm from Washingtion/Oregon state, so I'm not sure if the requirements will differ. To clarify, Mollen and Maxim are 2 different clinics. You have the flexibility to choose where and when you want to work, but you have to do it early because it is first come first serve. To answer your questions. No experience necessary. Maxim pays $16 and gave me an orientation. Although, I had to take a quiz and pass with 80% or higher it was easy because we had a reveiw prior to the test. Some of the nurses who worked for Mollen reported that they pay more around $20. See what other nurses who worked for Mollen had to say (link provided below)

I send my resume online for both clinics they responded within 14 days. Hope this helps.

Hear from other nurses who worked for Mollen

I know exactly how you feel. I am a 2008 graduate as well...although from MN. I flew out to CA twice this spring thinking I would have better luck. Joke was on me I guess. Just know that there are people out there who share your sadness and frustration. I think unemployed new grads need their own little private island where we can share stories and complain...and never have to hear the phrase "But I thought there was a huge shortage or nurses or something!" ever again. If you ever want to chat...just message me :)

I am signed up with Mollen & will work my first day this Friday. I agree, the scheduling is frustrating since the shifts are taken very quickly. I actually check all throughout the day when I'm home. At least 10x/daily & I only have 4 shifts so far. But don't give up. You never know when a shift might open up. They take new grads & considering what we are dealing with out in new grad world & this economy, we should be thankful.

If anyone has any experiences working in the Mollen clinic, I would love to hear what your day is like. Since I havne't had my 1st day yet, it seems like an aweful lot of paperwork. I'm just hoping I can work with someone that's done this before.

There is a SNF in Fort Bragg (a coastal town in Mendocino County) called Sherwood Oaks that was hiring new grad RNs last month. If any of you don't mind relocating to a beautiful area right on the beach, I would check into it. I only know this because they emailed my nursing school to let us new grads know about all the positions they had available. All of the new grads from my program have found jobs, and none of them were at this facility, so they probably have positions still open.

Hope this helps!

I talk to a recruitor today at a hospital. she told me that hospital would pay $ 5000 bonus for a nurse with at least one year experience, but won't invest the time and money on new grad RN. She said "new grad often left after 6 months for another job that paid just $ 1.00 more per hour." It is a frustration for small hospitals, but I am sure some of us would sign the contract for 2 years to gain the experiences and work as preceptor to train new nurses again. In today's economy, every one only sees short term profit now.
