New and currently enrolled at Rio Salado

U.S.A. Arizona

Hello, I wanted to introduce myself before jumping in and responding to posts. My children are old enough now that I feel comfortable going to school and finishing my degree. I stopped school five years ago when I got pregnant with my daughter. I have thought about nursing for five years and no matter how many times I try to venture off to something else, my heart leads me back to nursing. My youngest is now 18 months old and I feel ready to go back to school and have been doing research for the past few months. I am currently taking two classes at Rio Salado and am looking at enrolling for BIO 156 here in two weeks and then CHM 130 and BIO 2o1 for summer courses.

I am nervous and excited and very scared. The bad shape that the economy is in does have me very worried. It seems like everytime I turn around someone wants to get into nursing because the money is good and I feel like screaming because that is the worst reason for going into nursing. It worries me that it will make it that much harder for me to get the job I have wanted for so long.

I would love to talk to others who are in the pre-stages as well as though getting ready to start the program, have started the program, and veteran nurses. Any advice, thoughts, etc will be highly appreciated.

Thank you!

Angela

Hi,

I'm taking my pre-req's at Rio. Will be starting BIO 201 in April and BIO 205 in July. I took BIO 156 and PSY 245 at Rio recently. I plan to enroll in the nursing program at Yavapai College starting in January as I live in Prescott. I love this site, it has given me a TON of useful information. I too am hoping that there will be a job for me when I graduate. Those who are doing it just for the money will end up washing out because this is not a job for just anyone. I am 35 with three kids, a husband, a full-time job as a Police Dispatcher/911 Operator to pay for my life, and a part-time job to pay for nursing school. I don't know how long I'll be able to keep the p/t job, but we'll see. Keep in touch!

How did you like BIo 156 and PSY 245? Any suggestions?

I hope we both have a job when we graduate! My husband and I have talked about that as well. Those who are doing it just for money and their heart just really isn't in it will end up leaving.

I am 28 years old and have two children. I currently work for my parents and am able to keep my kids with me. How do you like the police dispatcher job? My husband has been trying to apply for police jobs, but that has been a stiff market with the economy the way it is too! We have joked that we sure do know how to pick the hardest times to pursue our dreams! Seriously though, we wanted our kids to be a little older before we did pursue our dreams.

You are amazing! Two jobs and three kids AND going to school? I guess I should be able to add BIO 156. I would love to keep in contact! THANKS!

Hello I'm new, just registered at rio taking BIO 156 set to start 5/18, hoping to apply to nursing program by the end of the year. I'm 30 also with 3 kids, youngest is 3. I'm hoping this is a good time to start a new career also, though I'm worried about taking courses at Rio, I hope I can hack it, science has never been a strong point for me....

Hi there, relatively new here too... I took all my nursing pre-reqs and co-reqs right out of high school but then left school to take a well paying job. I worked there for 12 years and was laid off a couple months ago. I am 33 and have 2 kids, one is 3 and one is almost 6, so I'm using this downtime to attend classes. I only need to repeat BIO 156 (doing that now) and BIO 201 before I can apply to the program. So far I'm really liking it, I forgot how interesting school can be!

Those are the classes I need to take too before applying, plus my NET exam, I'm hoping to apply by the end of the year. I"m going to RIO where are you going? I wish I could do a face to face but childcare cost are high for a stay at home mom?

I'm going to Rio as well. My kids are in preschool right now so I do my work while they are in school.

How is BIO 156 going? Any tips???

BIO 156 has been fine so far, but it's only been a couple weeks. There are a lot of essay questions, which I am relatively good at, so I got really lucky there. The instructor is very detailed and provides good feedback, so that helps also.

I'm not sure who I have yet. I'm hoping to get the two classes done and then apply to the nursing program. Rio will be my first choice due to the online issue not taking too much time from my family. I'm a bit nervous about it, this is a big step for my family and I wonder if I'll ever get into Rio's or any other nursing program with the wait list.....hopefully while I wait I can do the bio 202 and micro.....keep in touch, let me know how it's going ;)

Hi,

I too am taking my pre-req's at Rio in anticipation of applying in June 2009. I've already taken BIO 156 (over the summer) & CHM (over the fall) 130 and have 2 weeks left of BIO 201. Next is taking the NET test and then submitting my application. I've loved the ability to complete homework/essays/labs/quizes at my pace. I have a 4 and 7 year old + 3 part-time jobs.

Kudos to all multi-tasking Moms. :yeah: Wishing everyone an early Happy Mother's Day.

thanks for posting, i've been hearing rio is very hard with the BIO's. Looks like you did fine.....how are you preparing for the NET test? I can't wait till December to apply then hurry and wait to get approved? Although I'm in a 16 week course, can you work with your professor to do it in 14 weeks? I'm hoping to do this so that I can get into BIO 201 and have it all done by mid December...they will not allow you to get into BIO 201 till grade for BIO 156 has posted.....share your experiences with online science...is it really tough???
