ASU Post-Baccalaureate BSN 2018 - Welcome

U.S.A. Arizona

Hello!

I am a current post-bacc student at ASU. I am starting a thread for those applying to the 2018 program. Last year we had fantastic support from the 2016 class (and still have support from them today), so we are extending this help to the 2018 hopefuls as well! The feed for our class last year was an invaluable resource, so use this one to ask for advice or get answers to your"burning" questions (nursing school reference…you will see)!

Good luck to you all!

I hope we all get accepted and study together to become a wonderful nurse :)

I hope so too!!!

I hope so too!!!

How's A&P II going for you?? I tried to look for you the first week but there's more students than I expected! haha

Anyways, hello everyone! :) I'm currently taking A&P II accelerated as well and signed up to take the TEAS on August 25. This fall I'll just have 1 more class to complete- Human Patho. My fingerprinting/immunizations/CPR certification are all complete and today I recieved my acceptance to ASU as a community health major. Just waiting on them to evaluate my transcripts! But I've already met with my advisor twice so we're good to go in that arena as well. :) I'm super nervous about the TEAS, mainly because I'm a slowwwww test taker. haha Always have been. I plan on starting to study once A&P II finshes up on July 20. I bought the ATI Secrets study guide and the 2 practice tests from the ATI website so hopefully that will be sufficient enough!

Great!

My TEAS exam is on Aug 30. I wanted to have extra time to study :) I am nervous too. I am not a good test taker :(

I hope we all get in :)

Me too! I'm curious as to how many applicants they anticipate. My advisor said they had been meeting with a lot of Post-Bacc hopefuls recently but I want to know what "a lot" looks like. haha Do you have any prereqs left to take this fall? Or all you all done?

I am done by this Summer :)

last year, they only had 49 or 48 applicants and they all got accepted

hopefully, this happens again this year :)

Ahhhh they've had a lot?! Also I did my fingerprinting and thought it would take a little longer so I waited literally a day before calling to tell them I had a change of mailing address and they told me it had already gone out! I was super surprised. I just want this nutrition course to open up already so I can get it finished ASAP. My professor didn't have a ratemyprof page so I took that to mean they haven't made an impression on students negatively or positively. Does anyone else think it's odd that you can't just send in your transcripts to a central site for all of the maricopa community colleges to look at considering you sign up for classes and pay tuition as a collective? I wanted to hunt around for different professors but I also didn't want to have to pay to keep sending out my ASU transcript.

While there were fewer applicants our year (I never confirmed the exact amount of applicants, I always thought that was just a rumor), only 43 made it to the start day of the program, and there are now only 41 of us still in the program after the first semester. Keep working your tailbone off because it sure will pay off. I hope you all get accepted! Be prepared for the most exhausting and hardest year of your life but also the most rewarding. I can promise you it is worth every second and every meltdown you've already invested and will continue to invest!

Rmmccarthy, do you have any pieces of advice for us in terms of preparation for the first semester? I'll have a couple months free from classes and work before post-bacc starts. I'm gonna keep practicing my vital signs on friends and family, but are there any handy nursing books not included in the curriculum that have been helpful to you either for class or clinical? Since eleven months will go by quickly I'd like any head start that I can get! Thanks (:

I hope the rest of the semester goes well. I imagine you guys will be finished up soon and then starting your short break before the final

Semester!

My advise-

Get a planner and write down EVERYTHING in the beginning of the semester. If you don't, you'll get so lost, forget stuff, or just run out of time. Buy the books (you can find them used or the older version online for SUPER cheap) and read the chapters. They're very helpful when the teachers don't necessarily clarify things. The first semester it might seem like the tests just don't make sense but the "thinking like a nurse" will develop and you'll get better at test taking. Always do your best and if you did poorly on a test, don't wait to seek out help. And honestly, I would say just enjoy the time you have before you start the program. Get all the little things done that you won't even have time to think about once you start the program. It's an amazing program, a lot of amazing opportunities and awesome people. Just really try your best on everything and value your time and organize!!

As for residency, many of us did apply. This is the externship at Banner/Dignity/PCH/Mayo. Some call it a "transition to practice." If selected for one of these, we are able to do our immersion clinicals there during the last 2 months and start working with them as soon as we graduate until we pass the NCLEX. However, they only accept a certain number of people. Mayo does not pay for their residency/externship and it is still difficult to get in (but if that's what you want...go for it). Banner pays $15 an hour once you graduate until you pass. Dignity pays $12/hour. It's a fantastic program, I hear. However, if you don't get selected, there are many new grad programs with different hospitals that train you (and pay)! Banner's website said they hired 1000 nurses last year in their new grad program. We haven't heard back about the residency programs yet and will keep you posted.

I thought someone asked about residency. Now I don't see the comment. Awkward.
