Advice on Areas to Work Prior to Agency

I am a new grad and am about to start my search for work in San Antonio. I am planning to work for a year or so and then try agency nursing. What area should I be concentrating on now? I was thinking about critical care if I could get hired in that area.

I would think to do agency in critical care you would need 2 years experience. That's what our hospital requires. I would think med-surg would make a very good starting place as you'll want to be a bit of a generalist for agency work.

You need to pick the area that you like to work in, not where you think that you wil get the most agency work. The market for agency is always changing, the more areas that you can work is better for you, but if you are going to concentrate on one area, go for the area that you want to work in, and you will be the happiest, as well as become more marrketable to other hospitals.

I could not agree more with the advice you have received throughout this thread. My agency has an office in San Antonio, so I am familiar with the market. As a new grad you should select the field of nursing that your passion/interest draws you to. If that area is Critical Care - go for it.

The market in San Antoinio is very good - albeit not the best paying market at this time. Should you choose any of the "traditional" roles in nursing (ER, ICU, Med/Surg or Telemetry) you should have little trouble finding a position in a year.

Thanks for the advice. I really do like critical care and am going to try to get into that area. I may work med/surg for awhile first to get proficient in my organizational and procedural skills.

Michael, what kind of pay can be expected for agency nursing in San Antonio? Also, do the nurses at your agency manage to work full time hours if they want to?

Critcal Care nurses will range from $34-$38/hr in San Antonio. Full time work is available seasonally - it will occassionally trail off - but there is consistent work available.

I would recommend M/S for 9 - 12 months. Get your skills, gain a wide focus and then narrow that focus to ICU. Good luck in either M/S or ICU...

Thanks Michael. That was kind of the plan that I had in mind. I start my job search next week. From the looks of it, I should be able to get hired in M/S at any one of the hospitals around here. I can't wait to get started!
