What to do after SEC assessment?

Hello to everyone.

I am a Registered Nurse in the Philippines with one year experience in the Operating Room and 3 months experience in the General Medical/Surgical ward (prior to being assigned in the OR). I have filed my application with CRNBC and I have done my IELTS already.

Last week, I received a letter from CRNBC stating that for CRNBC to continue assessing my application, I must take a SEC assessment test (nursinginbc.ca).

My original plan was to apply for a Work Permit/BC PNP after I get my job offer after CRNBC states that I am eligible to write the CRNE. However, since CRNBC will not be able to assess me until I take the SEC, my plan is now all messed up.

I know what the SEC is about, what worries me is how to go about this. Obviously, I will have to go to Canada sometime this year (my deadline is Dec. 10, 2009) and take my SEC, probably on a Tourist Visa. What to do AFTER the SEC assessment is what bothers me. Kwantlen U. said it will take them 3-8 weeks to release my results, and CRNBC sait it will take them 1-2 months to assess the results. If I fail, I would have to take some coursework and retake the SEC, if I pass I would then be eligible to write the CRNE. The timeframe between CRNBC assessing my results and, assuming I pass, declare that I am qualified to write the CRNE is vague.

So why is this troublesome? Obviously, I will have to STAY in BC while I wait out how all these events work out. Going back home to the Philippines would not be financially sound; I cannot imagine going back and forth to Canada without putting my family into serious debt. So I am stuck in Canada WITHOUT work for AT LEAST 3 months.

To IENs who have to take the SEC, what are your plans? What do you plan to do as you wait out the results of this process?

To CRNBC and other regulating bodies, I know why you have to do this, but would it not be better if SEC were offered OUTSIDE Canada as well? Or maybe somewhere else along the application process, maybe after getting 350+ hours of supervised work? Do you know you are asking IENs to travel to Canada to take the SEC without secure employment or even permission to work? Please know that the fare alone to Canada is no small change for those of us in developing countries, at least assuring us that this can be a ONE TIME expense with work at the end of the line for us to pay off unavoidable debts would be a step in the right direction.

To immigration and visa experts, what do I have to do to be able to find and do work in Canada for these months? Can I apply for a Work Permit when I have an employer? Obviously I cannot work in the hospital, but any work for proper pay is fine, so long as the work (and my stay) is legal and the pay is proper. If I need to do coursework, will I have to appy for a Student Visa as well?

Thank you very much for your time.

hi everyone,

i've been going over and over the site but can't find what i'm looking for.

im just wondering, how long will it take for CARNA to look up into my credentials to determine if I need to take the SEC or not. I understand that they will assess it one by one and depends on whatever, but I just wanna know how long have you waited? will it take a year? 6 months, 4 months? Sorry, I'm a bit demading but reading this SEC thing threads is nerve-wracking....

hi amber. you said that you are in a temporary working visa. i am also a temporary worker here in canada and thinking of taking the crne. i think they will require me to have a sec assessment. are you from the philippines?

me too. i plan to take it this march wish me luck. is it really true that its hard to find an employer in BC? thanks. :)

@RN_CANADA: I too, am wondering why it's so hard for RNs in BC to get a job when these health authorities are posting way too many job openings in their sites. My sis is a nurse and I heard from her that there's this one nurse who got a casual position from fraser health and she only gets called to work once or twice a month! Ironic, hey?

@kimmy 29

hi, are you too from the Philippines. Im now in surrey. I still have to complete the english requirement before I can pass the documents required by the CRNBC. yes, i think it is hard for international nurse to find a job in bc. i know someone who already passed the crnbc and yet she cant find a job.

You've got to understand the dynamics of the situation. The bulk of the positions are union. That means that internal applicants will be considered before going out to new hires. Nurses in many health authorities can hold multiple part-time positions to create "full time" hours for themselves.

Casuals get called last for available shifts. That means that NO employed part-time nurse wants to work that particular shift. Factor in a "casuals" availability and that reduces hours available. In my hospital there are casuals who refuse to work anything other than M-F dayshifts. If you are willing to work any combo of shifts there is usually work.

Having said that, if a unit has had a bad experience with a casual (lacking skills, attitude, etc) they can and do ask the staffing manager not to send them that particular nurse.

Many positions are posted that there is no need to fill. Money is short, the leave requiring coverage is short and it would just take to long to hire and orientate a new nurse, so manager's can't find "suitable" hires, Just easier for them to keep staffing with their own part time staff.

ah, now i understand. If there are really no vacancies available for new nurses especially the internationally educated, what are we supposed to do for now? Do you think it is a good idea if I take the LPN exam instead than proceed with the CRNE?

Obtaining an LPN permit isn't a consolation prize for not being able to find work as an RN. You have to apply to CLPNBC for an evaluation to determine if you are even eligible to write the exam.

When you move provinces or countries there is no magic promise of a job. Just different opportunities from home.

also I would like to ad, that if a health service is cutting down on jobs, it often reflects on all nurses.....RN's EN's LPN's, RPN's.

just changing designation does not often give more job opportunities.

hallo there nonoisky, l happen to be in the same situation with you. l just wrote crne this february. My greatest challenge right now is finding an employer in BC for completing the required 250hours and this is proving to be a challenge. My provisional license is expiring at the end of this year too. Can anyone out there help me with some advice on how best to fulfill these hours?Thank you in advance!

Hello everyone, I just recently move to Vancouver this september and I'm currently looking for my first nursing job here (as a provisional nurse) since I passed the CRNE last June 2, 2010. My problem at the moment is finding a hospital or facility that will hire me so I can get the 250 hours requirement to acquire my full registration. I have tried VCH, Providence and FraserHealth online application but still with no luck. I have been to a couple of facilities and have sent my resume to a bunch of others but as of this time only one has called me but the DOC wants me to complete my 250 hours first before they will consider hiring me. Can I have any advice from the experts here at allnurses so I can have the best chance for employment? Thanks in advance.

Hi there raiden213. Congratulations on passing the CRNE! Just following up to find out if you had any luck with getting a job offer. l am in Aldergrove BC and also experiencing the same problem.l have sent many applications as well but no luck. Any new developments to share, l will be grateful.

hi guys! anyone taking SEC soon? im having mine in a couple of months, flying to vancouver from manila sometime in may. looking for buddies with whom i can interact with and share anxiety with while preparing, it really would help. :)

Hi to everyone,

I just received from CRNNS that I have to undergo the following:

1. general competence assessment;

2. focused competence assessment in obstetrical nursing; and

3. focused competence assessment in pediatric nursing.

Can I ask any ideas how much will it cost me including the expenses in staying there, how many days it would actually take in days and can you wait for the result as long as your visa is still valid. If just in case the applicant will be given a permit to write the CRNE while still in Canada , can the applicant work as graduate nurse while waiting for her exam.

Thanks .
