Hi

I have been informed by Mt Royal College, that they had a cancellation next week and can fit me in for the SEC IEN assessment. I am like WWWWW HHHHHAAATTTTTT and thought I will give it a shot. However, I am not prepared. I question thou, is anyone prepared for these assessments.?

Should I just have the attitude, You can only do your best?

I dont know really, I am in shock knowing its next week now, no prep and going in like guns blazing?????

Assessment in OB and Peds? I have no idea now, so what difference would it make for next week?

Any ideas or advice?

Kylie

Hi Narmeen,

i was really encouraged from your posts on SEC assessment...it has given me a clear picture of actually what happens there...if you dont mind, just wanted to know the outcome of it and further instructions from the nursing board as i am also required to go through it...your help is greatly appreciated...God Bless!

hi guys,

just wanted to ask if the sec will individually cover medsurg, ob, peds & psyche or will it be incorporated in the whole exam?

thanks!

SEC assessments are individualized to the candidate. Please read the following:

No problem. I put that sticky together so that I wouldn't have to keep writing the same thing over and over. Makes it a lot easier to help people out.

goodluck to all of those required to take the SEC.

I am also asked to do it, I haven't booked a schedule for it yet.

Are there any fixed assessment dates and time?

Hi:

Sorry for delay. Actually I just came from Calgary. For sure I will help you and I will share my experience with you.

It was a 2-day exam in GN.

It was my understanding that I am doing one day theory and second day practical but, I was surprised when the lady told me that because of the room and assessor availability they have changed the schedule.

Anyways I have to do it so I was nervous but calm.

Day1: In morning MCQ's 103 question. Less theory and more n more psychosocial and priority based but do concentrate on theory as well. Must review CRNE prep guide.

Afternoon was a tough. I was given 7 cards to perform. I was given a patient and basically I have to take care of her from admission to discharge. Following are the steps.

1. Patient's History

2. Head to toe assessment

3. Medication (oral, IM, SC, Inhaler)

4. Wound dressing

5. Discharge teaching

6. Most important communication skills

It took me almost 3hours. Too much..................

Day 2: Morning, short question and answer again priority based, lots of drug calculation, drugs, situational based scenarios. Again I took me good 3.5 hrs.

Afternoon was a pretty short and quick. I was give 11 scenario to read and to respond in 3 minutes again theory and priority (Clinical Judgment)

For Triple jump assessment, I was given situation with minimal data so I have to asked question to get more data, identify problems, plan and make nursing diagnosis, implement and evaluate.

That's it............

Sorry for any writing error. I am in a quick but, I wanted to share this information. You know sometime it really helps to decrease anxiety. Good luck and let me know if you need any further information.

I wish you Good Luck.

hi narmeen. what are the specific nursing skills that they let you perform? and for the 7 cards, do they have instructions on the cards for you to do? also, did they ask a lot about drugs? were the 11 scenarios difficult? and for triple jump, will you be writing down all nursing problem, diagnosis, implementation, etc?

Hi, i've also been asked to complete SEC, in the areas of paeds, mental health and obstetrics. There doesnt appear to be fixed dates/times, except you need a full 8hrs for each speciailty. You should have been provided with info on who to contact - mail them some dates and they should get back to you.

Good luck

Hello,

I would just like to ask what were the results of your SEC assessment? Have they let you sit the CRNE already?

For those who have taken SEC assessment and required to take courses, May i know who will pay for the course? how long is the estimated time for a one course?

Thanks . . .hit me back aight.

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

You pay.

Most of the required courses will be one semester long, or four months. They include both didactic and clinical education.
