Anyone attending WSSU fall FNP program? or is there anyone that can shed some light please, I'm currently in FL I'm trying to gather as much info as I can before moving.

I am in the research phase of FNP programs. I have a MSN already, but it's the Healthcare Administration concentration and not FNP. I will have to continue to work full time. Does anyone know if the WSSU FNP post-master's certificate program coursework is online? I am sure the assessment class is on site. Does anyone know if it is at all possible to find weekend clinical sites so I can continue my M-F full time job?

Hi CopperTop Nurse,

No, WSSU program is on campus. You will start out going 2 days a week and it will eventually end up being 1 day a week. It is virtually impossible to continue to work M-F and complete this program. I worked weekends (7am-7pm). We could not attend clinical on the week-end because the school was not open during that time. Have you tried East Carolina, Duke, or South University? These classes are online,You may have to go on campus several times, but the majority of the programs are online. I know that East Carolina will find your clinical site for you. WSSU want you to find your own clinical site. They will help you if you can't find one, but it may be 1 to 3 hrs. away from your home. Whatever program that you decide on...just know that it is going to consume your life! Good Luck on finding the program that is right for you.

Thanks for the info 1QuteRN! I think commuting 2 days a week plus working would be a bit much for me. How are clinicals set up? Do you arrange your own? Or do they use local people?

You set up your own clinicals, you just have to sign a contract with the facility once you find a preceptor. Clinicals are 192 hours per semester. So about 12hrs weekly, that could be done one day a week.........it's gonna be a very busy next year and a half for me.

Hi, bsn2npwannab

are you in the program at wssu? I'll be coming in this fall.

Hi 1QuteRN!

I graduated May 16, 2014. Try to enjoy your family and friends this Summer, because it's about to get real! Form a network with students or a student that has the same work ethic as yourself. Keep up with the readings and assignments. Try to get the majority of your clinical hours at the beginning of the semester just in case of bad weather or something comes up. It was a long tedious journey, but I think it will be worth it in the long run. I took the AANP exam in June and passed it on the first try. Some of my colleagues took it during our last semester and passed. It was hard, but achievable. KEEP COPIES OF EVERYTHING...lol... Good Luck as you enter this phase of learning in your life:).

HI BSN2NPwanab,

Thanks for the info and saving me some research time! I will look into ECU and the other sites you mentioned. Congrats on graduating and passing the exam! This might not be the right time in my life to work toward my FNP due to clinical requirements and the fact that I have to stay in my current job. (I love my current job and financially I can't go anywhere- I just worry about the long term viability of this job and my ability to move to another state.)

Congrats on graduating! :-)

thanks so much for you advice and encouraging words. I'm excited and nervous all at the same time.

Hello, just wanted to add a little more info to this thread. I am currently in the program going into my final year (yes!). I am full-time and have managed to work full-time since the beginning. A large majority of my classmates work full-time as well. It is challenging at times but certainly doable. We do find our own clinical sites and clinicals are usually two days a week. You can do clinicals on the weekends if you find a site that is open then and get it approved by faculty. I am absolutely satisfied with the program thus far and feel very prepared when in clinical in comparison to students from other NP programs. But I am biased since I went here for undergrad! ;-)

Thanks! For that helpful info. Are any WSSU students do clinical with CVS minute clinics?

No, this is a Family track nurse practitioner program so we can only do them in family practice, internal medicine, peds, or women's health.

Greetings,

Congrats on your upcoming graduation. I was wondering If you can offer any other advice about the program. THANKS IN ADVANCE :)
