  1. 0 Hello I am a 1st year nursing student and I am really curious about a first assistant nurse in the OR I know I have a whole till I start working but I've looked for requirements and schools that offer this certification to become a first assist. If anyone has any info that would be greatly appreciated

My wife is an OR RN and I believe(probably wrong) that the physician decides who they want as first assist and the physician pays them, not the hospital.

    I THINK.

RNFA is a specific credential, often considered an APN, from AORN:

"The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a perioperative registered nurse who functions in an expanded role or an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). functioning as a first assistant. The RNFA role is recognized within the scope of nursing practice by the nurse practice acts in all 50 states."
