Any UAB FNP students/grads?!

Hi everyone!

I'm in the process of applying for UAB's FNP program and after researching further and learning of the competitiveness of the FNP program I am getting a bit nervous about my GPA! I have an overall GPA of 3.23 (darn college years), but have a strong resume & references. For those of you who have gotten into or graduated from the program, what was your GPA (if you don't mind me asking)? Thanks for your help!

I am a current UAB FNP student and I am in my first clinical semester. I have been really pleased with the program, the instructors go out of their way to help with understanding and becoming a nurse practitioner. Its not easy by any means but this is a good thing. With admissions, I was a 3.2 GPA, 4 years of nursing and a good resume/references. Make sure that your essay is really good, they consider that. I live in Birmingham and found this very convenient, I also work at UAB hospital. There are a few 3 day sessions called OSCE, its basically an onsite evaluation stuff, but is very helpful. I was really nervous last semester which was my first but should not have been. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

ryguy are there live lectures? What textbooks are used for patho, pharm, and assesment?

Thanks!

Did you take the GRE or waive it? I decided to apply last minute so chose to "waive" it on my application since I don't have adequate time to study for or take the GRE. I have 9 years of clinical experience, 2 of those in management. Do you know what they are looking for on the essay? Did you cite a lot of articles? I've been gathering "evidence based" articles all day. :)

I've never heard of citing articles for an admissions essay...

The instructions for the essay specifically state to use "evidence based literature" to support discussion. Yikes!

Yeah, the program coordinator for the one I'm applying to said to make sure that citation (in text and in a reference section, APA format) is in there. I'm guessing admissions has a scoring system for applications, and that probably has some points assigned.

That's interesting. Definitely a first!

Well, it seems like an easy disqualifier for applicants, don't you think? You can cull people who aren't familiar/adept at APA formatting, since they'd have issues in NP school right off the bat.

ScaryKarrey, what programs are you applying to?

I've applied for Fall 2014 admission to UAB (AGNP/WHNP), UIC (CNM/WHNP), and Allen College (AGPCNP). Where are you applying, LSweets?

Just UAB for now. If I don't get in there, I'll take the GRE and apply to programs in the spring. I'm looking for programs that are primarily online. I like the flexibility it brings. Good luck!
