Hi , I am wondering if there's any oncology NP here to share your experience?( medical oncology) what's your day like? I had 4+yrs experience as a hospice RN and few months as a palliative care NP. Recently looking to go back to work after being a stay home mom for a while. I'm a FNP, but since I haven't practice for a while, kinda hesitate whether to try family practice or stay with my hospice/palliative or geriatric background. Also tired of driving around( although home visit NP is getting popular nowadays) one of the opportunity came out recently is oncology NP. Still waiting for second interview, I like its close to palliative care part of symptom management and no need to travel, but not sure if it fits me. Just want to hear if there's any oncology NP here to share your thoughts. Thank you.

Bump.

I'm curious about this as well.

I'm an RN working on an inpatient Oncology unit. I am applying to FNP programs and have been wondering about working as an Oncology NP.

I'm curious as well. I'm a Women's Health NP, planning to get a post-master's and DNP in Family and am researching various practice settings other than primary care.

1. As an RN in acute care Med-Onc and a soon to be FNP student, I am also curious what Onc NPs do, especially in outpatient settings.

2. OP, to your question, I work as an RN in Med-Onc. Used to be at a major teaching hospital and now work in a smaller regional hospital. In the major teaching hospital NPs in Oncology worked as hospitalists or covering providers. They basically did what the medical residents do - cover in-patients, prescribe, diagnose, develop plan of care. They were supervised by an MD. In the smaller regional hospital the Onc NP seems to have a more consultative role, this individual does not have assigned patients, does not put in orders etc. Dont have any more details yet. So, I guess responsibilities can vary.
