2 1/2 yrs acute care exp - What are my chances of getting a job in Hawaii?

Dear Nurse Beth,

I've seen similar questions on this site, and hope this isn't redundant. I'm an RN with 2.5 years experience on a surgical unit, I've worked as a charge nurse for the past 10 months and am on the "skin and wound" team in my current hospital. I am definitely moving to the big island of Hawaii this December, and am worrying about the chances of getting a full time hospital job. I understand there is stiff competition, but most of the threads I've read on here are several years old or are more relevant to new grads. I'm just wondering what you/the nurses using this forum think about the chances of a hospital hiring me?

Thanks!

Dear What are my Chances,

Aloha!

Your credentials are great- 2.5 years of acute care experience in acute care makes you very marketable. The charge nurse experience speaks to your leadership skills.

The variable is the employment market/job culture in Hawaii. My understanding is that the turnover rate is low, as nurses are working longer rather than retiring, and guarding their jobs. In a relatively small community with few hospitals, it's very possible that networking is paramount to landing a job.

Your competition may be traveling nurses. Some hospitals prefer travel nurses as they can be cheaper in the short run (no benefits). I hope some travel nurses or nurses familiar with Hawaii chime in to help you with inside knowledge of the job landscape for nurses in Hawaii.

I would call some travel agencies to learn more about Hawaii as part of my research. Ask questions. You will definitely get some information to help you plan your strategy. You may even consider exploring if it would make sense to take a travel assignment to get your foot in the door, if need be.

I just saw this on Facebook I work for a big healthcare staffing agency here in Hawaii. I just got offered a recruiting contract for L and D and NICU nurses to come here and work at our top pediatric hospital on my island.(Kapiolani Medical)It is a 26 week contract with possibility of being hired after. It offers full time hours and living expenses and also would cover the flight here. It's a great opportunity for anyone who wants to come here. The pay is based on living expense so it's really good!

If you or someone you work for is interested can you have them call me or message me? This assignment is strictly for mainland RNs. If there is a job board at your hospital can you post on it? They can contact me at 808-953-7255. A new wing was just added and they are looking to staff it immediately. Thanks, Gretchen”

Research the other hospitals, for example, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii.

Have you applied to endorse your license to Hawaii? Professional & Vocational Licensing | Licensing Area: Nursing

Best of luck, congratulations on your upcoming move, and please keep us posted. How your experience unfolds will help other nurses. I hope you will update us.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
