Young and single! Should I move here?

Published

Hi everyone! I don't graduate until 2007 but why not start searching for a new place to live now? I'll be 21 when I graduate and have no kids. Where's the best place for me to live in Florida?

Im a native and Ive seen incredible changes in the landscape and demographics of this county- some good some bad.

Baptist Hospital of Miami is building a beautiful state of the art hospital in Homestead. It is about 30 miles south of Miami. Baptist has a number of hospitals in Miami and they are a great company to work for. Their website is baptisthealth.net-- you can check out the job listings and see the different hospitals.

Homestead might still have some affordable housing-but dont wait too long. There is a huge building boom going on there right now. A neat thing about Homestead is you can hop in your car and drive south and be in Key Largo in less than 30 minutes and you feel like you are on vacation. Or you can hop in your car and drive north and be on South Beach or Ft lauderdale in 45 minutes. Since you are young and single that may be very important to you, but I dont do South Beach, I can't handle paying $12 for a drink! Anyway, the hispanic population is most probably the majority here. We have south americans, central americans, people from the islands- you name it we are a huge melting pot of every color of the rainbow. I speak very little spanish and I actually feel somewhat handicapped by not knowing the language. Next semester im going to start spanish class. So that should be interesting for this gringa :imbar .

I live in Pinecrest which has become a very affluent area. If you own a 3 bed 2 bath home that was built 30 yrs ago,on a half acre. You could probably sell it for $600,000 - $700,000 and the new owner would demolish the house and build a 12,000 sq. ft castle. We were lucky that we bought our house 6 yrs ago before the market went crazy. We joke that we could make so much money off our house but that we wouldnt be able to afford anything with the money we'd make.

If I could pick anywhere to live in the south florida area, I would probably go a bit north of here- ft lauderdale, delray, wpb, jupiter, mainly because I feel like a minority here. I didnt always feel this way of course but times have changed. And because it seems dade county is just growing out of control.

But my family is here and my roots are here so here is where I will stay.. :)

Good luck to you I hope you find all you are looking for

Hi, I live in South Florida. It is beautiful here in the winter, (and yes it can get very cold here too, just no snow). Just remember what most people forget. Living here is like living anywhere else, unless your wealthy, you have to work. I haven't had a tan in ten years. I haven't been to DisneyWorld in twelve. It is not all sunshine and roses. Visit around the middle of August and see if you can stand the heat, because believe me, what we don't have in snow, we make up for in humidity. Ive had a lot of friends move here from up north and 95% have all moven back. I would suggest you visit first before you make major life changes. I moved here when I was 15, Im now 42, so believe me I know what I say.

No offense but I would consider other options. You can make a lot more money elsewhere. I dont know if you are set on the beach but you should consider phoenix. good pay, cool city, lots of younger people.

Back on topic...

I was raised and lived most of my life in Lake Worth, Fl, about 60miles north of Miami. I currently live & work in Melbourne on the coast east of Orlando.

There is much to enjoy about living in Florida.

I really like the warm winters.

Beaches & ocean are great.

Rivers and the Fl Keys are way cool.

Some very good, world class hospitals.

And now , for the rest of the story:

Low wages

Obscenely high housing costs.

Non-stop sprawl in many areas that have covered everything beautiful with concrete or asphalt.

Major United States cities where Spanish is the preferred language

Greed & anger abound.

Think carefully before you make such a major move. Maybe get some experience and then come down as a traveller. That wayyour agency pays for transportation & housing while you check out the different areas around the state. The grass is not always greener, you know.

Yes. Definately!!!! Come on to central florida.

Anywhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

south beach is your best bet :) ...

Anywhere in the Tampabay area. St.Petersburg is good because it is close to Largo, and just a drive over the brigde from Tampa.Tampa is good because there is a lot of night life for the younger crowd. Traffic is really bad but I guess you get used to it.
