You might think I'm from another world!

Hi! I am hoping I get the help and advise I need. How do you begin your carrer for ADN? Do you take all your basics first (how long will that take) then take the program prerequisites courses and then apply to nursing school?

I have all the support I need to start but need some help from you to figure out how to make this happen. Please help!

Different schools have different requirements. *In general* people do their prerequisites (Chemistry, A&P, Stats, etc.) and then apply to nursing school when they finish them or in their last semester of prerequisites. That process can take a year or less or 2+ years, depending on your prior education, background, and the requirements of the nursing school(s) in question. But some nursing schools have very few prerequisites (i.e., they incorporate the sciences into the nursing curriculum plan). Figure out which schools interest you (cast your net widely!), go to their websites, get their brochures, etc. and then READ, read, read! If you have questions about the rules/requirements, call the school(s) and ask. You can also ask on this forum to see if other people are applying to the schools you are interested in, and ask them what they have done to prepare for applying.

Good luck!

We had to have 2 pre-req classes (Medical Terminology, and Basic Math) before we could be added to the waiting list.

My school has an orientation meeting for potential student nurses once a month. At this meeting, they tell you all the pre-req's, how long the waiting list is, etc. You might check the schools your interested in, and see if they do the same thing.

The very best of luck to you.

I want to thank you guys for responding. I only have a highschool diploma, only the prerequisites are required or would I have to have college credits already?

You would only need the pre-req's complete. Do you have a specific school in mind? If so, you need to go to their website and find out what are their pre-req's. You can ususally take your pre-reqs at a CC.
