Specialties NICU

Published

Now that I'm about done with nursing school, I thought I had settled on adult critical care. I have done my internship in an ICU and I do enjoy it. It's just everytime someone mentions NICU I just wish I could say I did that. I'm drawn to it as if it's a magnet. I can't stop wondering about it. It's a really controversial thing for me in a lot of ways, but I just can't stop thinking about it. How did you guys feel when you knew NICU was for you? I feel so torn. :uhoh21:

I knew from the beginning of nursing school that I did not want to work with adults and nursing school pretty much confirmed that. I was torn between NICU and PEDS at first but my time on the NICU floor coupled with the fact that my 2nd son did a short stint in a NICU pretty much cemented to me that NICU is where I belonged.

Have you spent any time in the NICU like a shadow day? If not I highly recommend it.

I have spent a couple of days in NICU. Otherwise I wouldn't be in this situation haha...

For me, it was the one day I spent in the NICU during my peds rotation in school. I also knew early on that I would not really like to work in adult care, but I also thought I liked the critical care aspects. My one day in the NICU, there was a premie with several defects there that made such an impression on me. I just saw this innocent little life that was going to be challenging and realized that I wanted to help those little guys get through their tough time. I'm so glad I decided NICU and wouldn't change it for anything.
