sigh, mentally shake your head, and start explaining.

No, I really don't have to take your tampon out to put your foley in. There are separate "holes" for each.

Honey, a C6 fracture, really is a broken neck. What did you think a fracture was?

There are?!?!?! ;)

Sounds like we're having similar days! I keep thinking it's Friday, but I think it's a misconception whose roots are based in self-preservation.

People not in the medical profession may not know what a foley is or where it goes. Many patients may not know what it is called even if they have one because some healthcare professionals don't always take the time to explain all the objects which are stuck into their bodies. I also doubt if basic science books get specific for the names of the bones in the spinal column. The word fracture does have different degrees of severity in other applications.

I bet the person who works on your car, your computer or your taxes could make you sound like someone you just gotta sigh about also.

These are just good examples of opportunities to educate. It's better to have those patients than the ones who feel the need to tell you how to do every detail of your job. But I get what you mean. Sometimes the lack of knowledge of basic anatomy is surprising.

There was much more to the conversation than just the word foley. She knew what a catheter was...

as for the fracture, I asked very gently and in private what "fracture" meant to her, and we went on from there. I educate and explain everything I do............

We come here to vent, and or sigh, and to talk to folks who understand what we deal with.
