WW II nurse speaker at my community college

Published

I just came back from listening to Ruth Heckinger, an RN who served in WW II and 80 years young!!! It was great listening to her and her experiences. At the age of 21 and newly graduated from a diploma nursing school in NY, she decided to enlist and spent the next four years in places like Calcutta, Burma and North Africa (Casablanca). She talked about working 14 12-hour shifts in a row (7 pm to 7 am, no less!) and she had something like 8 wards of 24 men in each ward (192!!!). It definitely puts things into perspective, doesn't it! Somehow having 6-7 patients doesn't sound nearly as overwhelming.

All I can say is wow!
