I had surgery last July for a broken heel. Infection discovered during surgery (staph aricularis). Spent 4 months on wound vac with 12 weeks of vancomycin. Wound vac came off and within 3 weeks was back in hospital with 2 more infections that made it into my heel bone. (e-coli and proteus vulgaris). Surgery again and another wound vac. It has been 4 months and 2 weeks and wound is still not healed. 3 weeks ago depth of wound went from .8 mm to 2.0 cm. Today it measured 2.4 cm depth and the nurse said black chunky debris and purulent drainage. Pain level inside of wound(measuring etc..) is off the charts. Can anyone help me figure out what is going on? My doctor will do nothing at this point, in fact I have logged a complaint with the hospital. I should also include here that all along since the pre surgery blood tests in June, my labs (cbc, sed rates etc...) have always been within "normal" range. I believe that my wound is deteriorating due to either yet another infection, or that the e-coli, proteus vulgaris is still there. Can anyone offer any advice as to how to proceed? I would appreciate any help that anyone has. I have no insurance which makes second opinions next to impossible.

Unfortunately, there is so much more to wound management. Have you had vascular studies? Are you diabetic? Are you offloading the wound at all times? Do you smoke?
