Urostomy Night Drainage Bag

Specialties Wound

Published

I have to write a paper about a patient experience I had in clinical. This patient had a trauma-related urostomy that was relatively well-cared-for, but his other illnesses were definitely not.

The wound/ostomy nurse came by for a consult and she was teaching me about some basic things (how it works, basic care, etc). She mentioned that my patient didn't use a night drainage bag, which was "bad". I'm writing this paper now, and I can't find any information about why this is "bad"! The patient produces urine pretty regularly, but doesn't get up in the night to empty the bag. He just lets it fill up pretty much completely and then empties it when he wakes up. Is it a potential infection issue, or something else??

Thank you!
