Wound Care LPN - need advice

Published

I'm a relatively new nurse (2 years), and have been working as a charge nurse/wound care nurse in my LTC facility. I'm basically learning by experience, as I'm not certified as a wound care nurse, and am looking for any advice anyone can give me... I'm in the process of going to school to finish my BSN, but feel like I need help with my wound care skills right now. Are there any sites out there that can help me with assessments & treatments? I'm doing a good job (if I do say so myself), and have done much better than I'd anticipated, but because my experience is so limited, I'm constantly looking for resources to help me to find new, better and more appropriate treatments. The facility I work in pretty much gives me carte blanche in regards to what treatments I choose to use, which is great in some respects, and frightening in others (I don't want to 'experiment' on anyone, and potentially make anyones wound worse), therefore I stick with the limited number of treatments I've been exposed to, which have been very successful thus far.

Does anyone have any advice? Any sites or resources I can learn from?

Thank you!!!!

Order Advance Magazine for LPNs. It is a free periodical for nurses. Most times, they list classes on wound care certification that last for about 5 days. I'd also ask my old school what they know and see if they can provide resources. I went to a different school to learn about wound care but it was a one day course-no certification. It did peak my interest in wound care, however. If you live in New York, Beth Israel School of Nursing may be the best for you for the one day seminar. Best of luck!

HI! Have you looked into a class with the Wound Care Education Institute? I took their 4 day class and was able to sit for the certification exam given by the National Alliance of Wound Care at the end of it. I have never learned so much about wounds. They are also there if I need clinical support anytime. I highly recommend this course! They go all over the country doing their courses.

I just looked up their phone number for you, 1-877-462-9234. They also have a website http://www.wcei.net . Good luck!
