Would like feedback on psych nurse job offer

Published

I have been offered a FT psych nurse position. I applied for a geri-psych position however at the interview I was told they do not offer that service anymore. It's ages 12 through adults though patients under 18 are housed separate from 18 and up of course.

The Director used a lot of vulgar terms/words. I'm not a prude by any means. And I have a thick skin but the interview very uncomfortable as the Director was argumentative and confrontational to the point it was difficult to repond to the questions. The Director stated it was "role playing" to see how I would respond but it seemed excessive at times. Evidently I did well or acceptable as I was made an offer. I was not offered a tour of the facility nor did I meet any other staff. The Director told me repeatedly there was "exceptionally high drama" among staff so I needed to understand that coming on board.

The offer is $40/hr, free health insurance (which I don't need but its part of the offer). The schedule is 2 days one week, 4 days the next, all 12 hr shifts that start at 5:30 a.m. and end at 6:00 p.m. I would work with both adult and adolscent populations.

My concerns are I have not worked psych before and have never worked with any patients (outside of my nursing school clinicals decades ago) under the age of 18. I do not have children and know nothing about them or teenagers.

I live 45 min from the facility so w/the shift starting at 5:30 a.m. I would need to be up by 3 a.m. and on the road by 4:30 a.m.

The reviews for the facility both by staff and former patients are less than stellar. I don't place a lot of stock in reviews unless they are overwhelmingly positive or negative. These are definitely negative.

The money is great, the benefits too but I am just not sure starting out in psych this is the best option.

I declined the offer this afternoon.

I'm reading this about 2 weeks later. Glad you declined the offer. Four 12 shifts in one week seems brutal, especially since we don't know if they said they would ensure it was not four in a row. Also 12 hour days with dramatic staff and I'm assuming no reassurance from the director that that is being worked on - no thanks! 🙂↔️

What state are you in anyways?

be well:)
