Would you critique my Nursing Philosophy?

hi, i have a one-page nursing philosophy summary assignment due on monday and i was was just wondering if someone would look at it and tell me if i am on the right track? i need 5 references...i only have 3 so far, so i'm still working on it. i don't know why, but my mind just went crazy, :uhoh3:i couldn't really figure out how to write a philosophy...maybe because it is our first paper.:trout:

here it is:

i believe that nursing is my special calling. it is a way for me to be able to show and express the respect and compassion i have for my fellow humans. a nurse must be knowledgeable in skills, have a positive attitude and be able to show empathy and compassion for people. according to badke, "the ability to show empathy is a fundamental requirement to acting in a helpful way" (2007). it is very important to be able to "put yourself in the client's shoes".

nurses have to entertain many different types of roles such as aide, educator, etc. these skills are essential in being a productive and well rounded nurse. i belive that a nure should know ways to cope with the stresses that will arise, such as the use of stress education and management strategies, team-building strategies, balancing priorities and enhancing social and peer support (chang, hancock, johnson, daly, jackson 2005).

cultural diversity does not play a major role in my philosophy. however, here in the "land of opportunity", we have many different cultures that are coming to the united states of america to be able to receive the education, jobs or health care that they can not necessarily receive in their native land. nursing involves at least two people (nurse and patient) that generally have different cultural orientation or intracultural lifestyles (jarvis, 2004). therefore, since we live in a "melting pot", i feel it is important to put an effort in to learning a little bit about the cultures and languages that are prevalent around south louisiana. on the other hand, i feel it is equally important for those different cultures to put effort in to learning a little about our southern culture and language.

philosophy - the general principles or laws of a field of knowledge, activity, etc. (i.e. nursing) - a study of the processes governing thought and conduct

this is an exercise in thinking and writing. pretty much the sky's the limit as everyone's idea of what nursing is will differ. there are no right or wrong answers. this is mostly an exercise to test your ability to organize your thoughts, apply references and present everything in acceptable english. so, you are going to be addressing what you think nursing is all about. how should a nurse act? what kind of things should nurses be doing as professionals? what kind of education and learning does it take to be a nurse?

i think the question you want your paper to answer is what is the overall purpose of nursing. that will be your philosophy of nursing. your career goals, then, would be tied in to how you would achieve that purpose as a practitioner.

i happen to think that nursing has very spiritual goals in that nurses give of themselves to patients more than they ever receive back from them. what we eventually receive back comes later, perhaps in another lifetime. we serve selflessly and for the purpose of knowing we are doing something worthwhile. in our interactions with people we constantly drop little seeds of learning, some of which sprout and, hopefully, create a better life for those persons. so, in that way, i hope we influence the larger spectrum of society. in return, we also receive learning and wisdom from our patients to help us as we make our way through our own lives. i don't know how my life would have been different if i had gone into another profession other than nursing, but i do think it wouldn't have been as interesting.
