Does anyone work for the state of Michigan? I am a RN looking into working for the state and am curious about the union and how that works. Also, how do you like working for the state? I don't live in Michigan, but hope to be moving there soon. Thank you.

Hello, not a state employee here. However, I did apply for a consultant RN job for the State of Michigan back when I graduated from my MSN. Just thought I'd give that a try and see if I liked it. I was actually hired. It was a job involving annual inspections and licensing for nursing homes in the state. The state pays less than private sector but benefits were better as far as health insurance and pension. Some benefits have actually changed because of budgetary constraints within the state government. For instance, the job involved travel and usually a vehicle is furnished for you -- that wouldn't be the case all the time anymore as I was told. Union was through UAW. I didn't ask about further details about it though. In the end, I declined the job and ended up in clinical practice as an NP which is the original intention of my MSN program.
