Working in Renal/Dialysis

Published

Hello everyone! I am pursuing my RN and this field is one of the reasons I decided to go for it! (I was scared about trying to become a RN and have been chewing on it for a year until now when I finally gave myself a swift kick & told myself to get moving!)

I was wondering how you get into this field? Can you start in it from school? If not, where would I want to begin?

How do you all like it?

Thank you very much. I appreciate how you all are so helpful to us new ones!

Hello Billyjean and WELCOME to Allnurses !!!

I would say a good place to start would be to read through some of these threads and responses here in the renal/dialysis forum and get a "feel" for it.

There are many aspects to nephrology, dialysis being only one part of it. Personally I feel nephrology is a MOST interesting field, one I myself would like to learn more about... the kidneys are responsible for soooooooooooooo much !!!

I started out in dialysis as a tech, then went on to get my RN while continuing to work at our freestanding clinic. Have been there 6 years and have loved every minute of it.

Here is a link you might find interesting as well, perhaps it can give you a little glimpse into the fascinating world of nephrology.

Again, welcome, glad to have you on board, and wish you well in your endeavors !

Don't be shy... jump right in and become part of the family ! :D

Thank you so much! I am going to check out those sites right now! I appreciate this! My brother died in '95 from kidney failure and at that time I had no idea I was going to go into nursing, but when I decided on this career and saw I could work in nephrology...it was kind of like being slapped in the face. I knew this was where I wanted to be.
