Working with Preceptors who Don't Want to Precept

Published

Let me preface this by saying that I have a great deal of respect and appreciation for preceptors. Having been a preceptor myself, I know that it can be a ton of work, and at times can feel like a thankless job.

That said, does anyone have advice on how to make the best of a situation where your preceptor has no interest in precepting (but was obligated by management to precept anyway)? This seems like an especially pervasive problem in units with high turnover and large new hire cohorts, since there simply aren't enough 'willing' preceptors available to meet the needs of all of the new hires. As an orientee, what steps can I take to make the process as painless and mutually beneficial as possible?
