What does per diem typically mean?

as needed, contingent. You likely won't be able to receive benefits like health insurance or any other perks, but you may be offered more money to make up for this (though it really doesn't add up, often). If the place has a need for an aide for the shift, you can work it, if not, no, often. I know of some places that will give you a schedule, though, but the part and full-timers could bump you.
