Working in Nursing School

Published

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where a good place to work during school would be? Or would it benifit me more to get a job as a patient care tech at a hospital?

Definitely go for the patient tech/CNA job. Also, look for nurse tech or extern positions that some hospitals hold for nursing students. You will get lots of hands on experience. I work one 12 hour shift on a Saturday and it works great.

Do you think you could handle working 3 12-hour shifts if you had to?

I would work two 12 hour shifts at most, but I guess it depends if I had no other option or if I was the sole income in my household. When I work a 12 hour shift I am a zombie when I get home. If you could make yourself study for a few hours after it would be helpful. Are you working weekends on weekdays?

I agree. Nurse tech, CNA, patient care tech, phlebotomy all good things. Doesn't always need to be in a hospital although that is the preferred route. Find an employer who is willing to work with your schedule, and stands by it. Normally, employers are looking for applicants just to fill a position. Make sure they care about what you are doing in school and at work. Assess how they treat their employees. Ask a lot of questions.

My schedule varies/rotates from week to week, but once I start the nursing program I will work weekends only. I currently work nights but want to see about going on days at that time, though I don't know how likely that is :/ My work will pay for NS but I have to stay fulltime, which is ok since I can't afford to work part time. Im really scared that it won't be doable though. All the other nursing student/PCAs I work with are contingent.
