Working for Federal or State?

Published

Hi guys! I need an opinion on which agency pays well or better. I’m an LVN and currently working for State of California for 8 years now. I got an offer to work at a Fedral System (Department of Veterans Affairs) in San Francisco. Is it worth it to leave State job I have for 8 years and accept an LVN Float position at the VA or keep my job for 8 years? Any response will be appreciated. Thank you ?

Something to consider is that I *think* your years of service at the state don't transfer over to a federal job for pension purposes (check with HR or PERS to be sure).  Also, aren't the salary ranges public information?

It does NOT transfer from State service to Federal. State has CALPERS for retirement, whereas Federal uses FERS. I did accept the job at the VA and I will be starting in 3 weeks. I can't wait ?

Congratulations!

Thank you! It was a hard decision for me, but I want a change. I think I will benefit and learn more working at the hospital than in Corrections.

Congratulations. I'm with the VA as well. It's an awesome agency to work for. Great benefits and it pays well.
