Working as a CNA while in nursing school...

Published

Hi,

Tomorrow I start a CNA class. I am a 2nd semester BSN nursing student & don't work at this time, but eventually I will probably have to get a job. Does anyone work as a CNA while in nursing school right now??

Thanks,

Candi

Well, I don't start the BSN program until next month but I've been a CNA since 2008. I was working full time but I switched to just working on Fridays and Saturdays since I'll be starting nursing school. It'll work out fine for me this coming semester because all my nursing classes fall only on Mondays and Wednesdays so I'll have free days throughout the week where I can study extra and get other things done. I think working through nursing school is doable but you have to make sure it doesn't conflict with your studies. There are many people out there who are or have worked through nursing school so it can be done.

I worked full time as a nurse tech at my local hospital for 6 months before deciding that nursing was exactly what I wanted to do. Fortunately, my directors are supportive and allowed me to go relief so I could focus on my studies in nursing school. The nice thing is having a foot in somewhere, it makes it easier to get a job when you graduate. Not to mention all the things you learn at work from nurses and fellow nurse techs. If you do decide to work as a CNA, I suggest you work relief. It has been great for me. I pick my own hours and the minimal hours I need to work a month to keep my position is 8 hours.

I have been an STNA - state tested nurses aide in a LTC facility for a year and a half now.

I just most recently got a nursing assistant job in the hospital where I eventually want to be a nurse (fingers crossed that I can transition over)!

I love working as an aide... It keeps my mind fresh and also provides me with an opportunity to learn!
