Work for LA County or VA versus working for a private hospital, which one is better?

Hi everyone.

I'm a new grad, I'm study for my NCLEX, but I still do not know where I'm going to work. I hear that working for LA county, or any other government hospital, like Veterans, will give you more benefits, but the salary will be less than in a private hospital and probably the ratio of patients is higher in a government hospital..In the other hand, I hear that private hospitals may give more opportunites as well as a better salary. I also hear about the VERSANT program, which is only available in Torrance and White Memorial; this program may help a lot for the transition of student nurse-to-professional nurse, due to the long time of training (almost 5 months) but I really don't know which is better...What do you recommed for a new grad? I will appreciate all your suggestions...

Thanks

I'm all for that Versant program. As a new grad I would really take advantage of it.In that program you will be kind of sheltered, not expected to know everything you suppose to know as far as your skills. Most of your skills will come from working on your own on the floor. If you were to go to a Hospital that only give you like 6 weeks of orientation, then you are thrown to the dogs.So take advantage of those type of programs so you will learn to be a safe nurse.
