I will be starting an ADN program in January to get my RN. I have heard multiple people mention that it would be really beneficial to try and work in the hospital while I am in school. I have started looking but it seems as though any jobs require a CNA or different types of tech certifications. I don't have any of these certifications - is there a certain type of position that I should be looking for or asking hospital HR about? I would really just like to get comfortable in the hospital setting, make professional connections and gain any real world experience that I can.
Thank you in advance for your thoughts!

Hi CAC26-
P.s. are those your initials??? My initials are CAC as well. Anyway, I am not in an ADN program yet-still taking my pre-reqs. But from what I see alot of hospitals will hire you especially if you are in your 2nd year of ns. I dont know if this appeals to you but some hospitals will hire you as a tech (when you are in ns) and will pay for your schooling if you agree to work for them in return. I think it is usually 2 years. Right now I am going for a unit secretary position. It's my foot in the door and then when I get into nursing school I can become a tech. I am going to do the internship thing where they pay for my schooling. To me I'm at least guaranteed I will have a job upon graduation, and what is really 2 years-not very long to me. Not sure if any of this has helped you. Call the nursing recruiter at your local hospitals and see what they can do for you. If doesnt hurt to talk to someone, right.

i am currently working as a pns (professional nursing student) at a hospital here. most hospitals offer positions to nursing students after you complete one clinical semester. the requirement for me was the completion of my first med-surg course. i think that i is very helpful working in the hospital because i am much less nervous about patient care and dealing with the staff during clinicals. i would look online at your local hospital websites and check out what they offer.

I'm trying for a unit secretary position, too! I went through a short training, and now I'm looking for a job. The hospitals here will pay for your nursing schooling if you are employed with them. You may also be able to get a job as a patient transporter or a sitter.
