Wondering About Changing My Major

Hello,

I am currently enrolled in a BSN program at a local college, and I was wondering if there would be a way for me to look into checking around to job shadow nurses. I've tried several times when I was a high school student, but in my area I've always been told that there were laws permitting me from doing so.

Right now, I've been looking around the threads on this site, and I've seen that a majority of nurses here seem very disgruntled with bedside nursing. I've heard the burnout rate is incredible in hospitals from my aunt, and she said that it can be very difficult to locate a job that does not involve a hospital setting.

I'm worried that this major may not be for me, and I'm looking around at the majors offered at my college and OT seems very interesting to me also. I also have a great interest in psychology, but I do not know if I would be smart enough to get into graduate school. My family is very disgruntled with my constantly shifting with the idea of switching majors, and my mother claims that nursing is a very good profession despite the burnout rate because of large range of jobs that are available.

What would any of you suggest doing? I'm unfamiliar with how to get a job interview with an OT, but I've heard that one of the best ways is to call around and ask for clinics that would schedule you to do so.

I think your best bet is to see if a local hospital has a volunteer program in which you can actually be around nurses instead of doing something like sitting at the front desk or working at the gift shop. I honestly think that is something you should've done before starting a BSN program so you would've known that it was something you did or didn't want to do. If not, then you might spend a lot of money working towards something you don't want to do. As far as you saying that you are not smart enough to get into a graduate school, that is already setting yourself up to fail, you need to have confidence in yourself and be prepared to work hard if that's what you really want. Nursing isn't any easier either. I wish you the best of luck and hopefully you figure everything out.
