Hi UK,
Interstate 40 is in Wilmington, I-40 is a straight shot to the Blue Ridge Mountains, you just stay on it. From Wilmington, I'm guessing it'll take you about 4 hours to be in the mountains. We try to get up there every Summer to go camping, it's absolutely beautiful.
A few weeks ago I found a place on the internet called Deep Creek Tubing - it's in a place called Bryson City in the Smokey Mountains (further up, near the Tennessee Border). We'd never been and wanted to take our Sons up there for the 4th of July Holiday, but they were totally booked for the holiday. Anyways, it looks like a great place, they are right next to the Smokey Mtn. National Park, really cute cabins to rent and your family can spend the day "Tubing" down the creek for only $4.00/person (that's Cheap Fun), hiking, shopping in town, etc.
This is their website: http://www.deepcreekcamping.com/Cabins.html
You can check out what they have to offer, lots of pictures of the cabins, etc. We've never stayed on a lake in the Mtn's, so I can't help you with that, but if you check around on the internet, you'll find tons of great places to stay in either the Blue Ridge or the Smokey's. Wherever you go in the North Carolina Mountains, you're guaranteed to see some fantastic scenery.
I hope you have a great trip the the States. By the way, Wilmington is also an amazing City - right next to Carolina & Kure Beach. We were there last weekend and had a great time, the waves were great, the ocean was as warm as bath water and there was a beach music festival going on, lots of fun. Drop me a line if you find a place in the Mountains, I'd love to know what you think of our State. Hope this helps you out a bit, have a safe trip, Sue
Did you ever make it up here to relax?
Hi Waynesville,
I know your question was to the poster from England, but I got a chance to go camping at Steele Creek near Linville Falls/Gap in July and absolutely loved it. It was a scary drive up to the Gap, but the views were incredible, I've never seen anything like it. My only problem was trying to figure out how to drive the mountain roads - I pretty much road my brakes all the way down, I know that's not what you're supposed to do, but was afraid of driving off a cliff...
You're so lucky to live in the Mountains, I'm guessing it's beautiful up there all year long - lucky you....

Hello,
I have been lucky enough to secure a 4 week oversees elective placement in Wilmington which starts August. However i have two free weeks before my placement starts. I would love to drive to the mountains(smokey i think there called) and spend a couple of days there chilling out with my other half and our two kids 11 and 9.
Does anyone know of a motel that would be suitable ideally located on a lake that we could spend a couple of days relaxing around. Any suggestions on area's etc. would be most appreciated.
