Dear Nurse Beth,

Okay so I'm almost done with my prerequisites for the LVN program at my school and before I register for the program I'm worried about 2 small warrants I have that are in a different state and are from 2017-2018 . Since they are warrants and not felonies , will they hold me back when it's time to get my LVN state license ? I assume I'd finish the program by 2025 .. any advice/help on what to do? 1st warrant is shoplifting from Walmart ( even though I wasn't the person stealing I just Was tagging along) and it's a failure to appear to court and 2nd warrant: I was selling perfume in front of a store that didn't allow that and they called the police and sadly the officers were calling me the n word and took me in so I didn't appear to court so I assume there is a warrant for that as well. Hope that information helps..

Dear Has Warrants,

Even though the school may accept you, you could run into trouble when applying to sit for the NCLEX.

You must answer all questions truthfully on your application. The questions vary from state to state.

When asked to explain or submit a letter of explanation, you must not minimize your actions. Read How to Write a Letter of Explanation to the Board

Using appropriate and respectful language and acknowledging the seriousness of the situation is vital when communicating with the Board of Vocational Nursing or any licensing authority.

Specifically, refrain from referring to "small" warrants. Don't blame the police for your failure to appear. The BON will look for insight and rehabilitative efforts or changes in life to prevent future problems or occurrences.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
