Will CRNA acceptance committees laugh at my geography degree?

Nursing Students SRNA

Published

Hello all,

I'll be graduating this spring with a BS in geography. I've been taking prereqs for PA school but have an interest in CRNA as well. I was wondering if anyone knows of any CRNAs that made it into school with an ADN and an oddball degree like geography. I'm a good student and I should graduate with an overall GPA of about 3.7 and a science GPA of about 3.75. I also recently took the GRE and got a combined score of 1330.

I appreciate the help!

Will the committee laugh ... I don't know, will you? Perhaps you know something we don't. Take it seriously, and I bet they will too.

They will want to hear your explanation for switching to nursing, but they will want to hear that from everyone and why you want to be a CRNA.

I'm pretty sure you have to have a BSN to apply for all the CRNA programs. When I interviewed with LSU they noticed I had a BS in Theatre and Fine Arts and they thought it was interesting. I did get accepted.

You seem to be contradicting yourself Gerlich. Either way, you do not need a BSN for most CRNA programs. The exceptions are programs that are housed in nursing departments and award nursing degrees, MSN or higher.

The person with the fine arts/theather degree probably had a BSN as well. As for the degree in geography- you will need to contact the schools you are interested in since they can independently determine what they consider an "other appropriate degree". Odds are if the program grants an MSN the only acceptable degree is a BSN, if they grant an MS they can accept a non BSN but be prepared that they may determine that your degree is not acceptable. Contact the program director to ask the question before you apply and save yourself the money if the answer is no. Best wishes- :)
