So my assignment is to figure out why someone with a Peg-tube recieve Protonix? I know that it is a PPI, and it suppresses gastric acid such as GERD, but what if my pt doesn't have GERD? any help will do.
nevermind....i found out...thank you.

I'm not exactly sure but I would say that because they have a peg-tube it could be more for prevention of any GERD side effects. They may not have had GERD before but with a peg-tube it could automatically increase their risk. They drilled in our brains to have patient sitting up instead of flat so their wouldn't be any reflux.

Hospitalized pts are at risk for stress ulcers and protonix decreases that risk. The G tube adds to that risk and so most all high risk pts get protonix while in the hospital. It will also help decrease the risk of reflux which could lead to aspiration, which could lead to pneumonia, which could lead to death, yada, yada, yada.
thank you for your input...i really appreciate it
