Specialties Neurological

I'm new to Neuro and although I like the brain... I was looking for support and comradery with other neuro nurses. This forum has the least number of members, and it just doesn't look as if I'll get alot of feedback here. Did I chose the wrong floor? No one likes Neuro?

I know a lot of hospitals near me have ortho and neuro grouped together. Neuro is pretty cut and dry but fascinating. I work on an ortho/neuro unit but my orthos have more problems than the neuros. I'm sure as people find this forum and post issues, it'll pick up.

I don't want to deter anyone from their dream from working on a neurology floor, I actually admire ANYONE that can! I am a float nurse at a magnum facility. I have 4 years of experience I went for my ADN, and currently my BSN I get floated regulary to the neuro floor because they can't staff it because it is the most detested floor.

The ratio is 5-6 on days 7-8 on nights, with seizures, migraines, strokes, chi, you get the idea, after last saturday they tried sending me there on monday and I had to refuse, I had 7 patients, no tech 2 inconinent patients (1 wit C-diff) 2 with bed alarms that kept climbing out of bed, 1 pt that was new onset seizures with no orders for anything to give for seizure activity, and that was the short of things. I had to beg the charge nurse to call the doctor for the lady with new onset seizures to get me an ativan order and a tele box and suggest that she moved to higher acuity floor I mean really 7 patients? I am only one person! Then I had a discharge which happened to be a homeless lady with MS that had been on IV steroids and she REFUSED to ride in a taxi "my immune system is too low to ride in a taxi" so... guess what??? YUP They TRIED giving me another patient ( I told them over my dead body, and no wonder no nurses ever floated to their floor, lol) I didn't eat lunch, and didn't even get to pee for 12 hours and when I got to my car I realized I hadn't sat down all day! I had never been so happy to be out of the hospital. So hopefully you'll go into neuro and you'll love it. I lost a lot of respect when I realized the charge nurse only had a year of experience.
