I see many posts on pre--nursing students applying to DE- MSN programs? I just wonder why one would commit so many years and so many $$$$ to find out if this is the career for them...yes, they think it is their destined career but until the tire hits the road no one knows if this is for them. Are you thinking you can avoid the bedside or minimize the time at the bedside? Please tell me your motivation for spending so much time and dollars on something you really maybe ( or may be you do) not know or have knowledge of.
I wonder if the fact that salaries have skyrocketed compels some to think they can have a well-funded annual salary as a nurse but do not know the $ is made by blood, sweat and tears?
Please just let me know your thoughts...Just the why!

I already have a degree, and that can be an issue with loans for people who have already used up undergrad loans. Not me, thankfully. But that's a thing.
I was looking at a specific DE MSN program recently because it has 1 year to NCLEX, then online classes to MSN for 1 year if full time. They have a different path that's 1 year to NCLEX then 3 years for NP, but I don't think I'd feel comfortable doing that with no nursing under my belt. Additionally, I might only be at that location for 2 years total. military spouse life. I don't even know if we are moving there... so it's kind of futile to think too much about it. Anyway, that's my answer.

Can I ask which one you are applying to that allows for online classes for MSN for 1 year fulltime? I'm currently looking into these programs for similar reasons.

On the off chance we get to move there… one can dream. It’s the graduate entry MSN at University of Hawaii Manoa.

I just applied to a DE-MSN program. For me it was more because for 7 years I have known being a psychiatric NP is what I want to do. I have a BS in Clinical Psychology already and quite a bit of experience in dealing with the public. There really is not anything that could change my mind that could come up with nursing. We have cattle and horses all of who require doctoring and what not but I've also worked at a vet for 2 years and even though people (and the animals sometimes) SUCK I still find it rewarding at the end of the day but its still no cake walk. I just know my heart is with human medicine as it is what interests me the most. I fully intend to help at bedside and where I can so it was not a short cut route for me as much as it was just a way to have a guaranteed spot in an MSN program that I can work on after getting my BSN. The cost to me averages out though when you compare it to what you will make after graduation. Plus, the hospital I plan to apply to in my area offers reimbursement for your MSN (or BSN) so I plan to try and take advantage of that once I have my BSN and pass the NCLEX.
I appreciate your answers-- all of you. I think I understand your motivations better.
