Is there anyone out there who can tell me about the UTMB and something about the quality of life in Galveston. Anything would be appreciated. Thanks.
Also -- I have heard such truly alarming things about working conditions for nurses in Texas. Is that your experience? Bad management, mistreatment, etc? Or is that just a few hospitals here and there?

Thanks Shirley,
I had seen some of your other posts and was hoping you would reply. Like I said I love Galveston. On the flip side my husband hates it. But he is just being shallow LOL. I do feel sad about the levels of ignorance and poverty in the population here. There is a "hopeless" feel to a lot of the BOI's here in the poorer sections. I try to do as much as I can for the island and hope that if enough people do the conditions will improve for all and not just be good for some. There is a program in Galveston through the medical school and the housing authority to help people into health care jobs (pays for school, childcare, transpo, tutors, etc.) but they aren't getting enough applicants. The school system here is a big problem. If I want to hear really bad grammer all I have to do is visit my daughter's elem school. It is not just the opportunities for higher education it is instilling the confidence to choose them. Anyway, off my soapbox for now, I am really considering the Surgical Assist program and then slowly working toward the BSN. Not sure yet. I am known as the "great vacillator". Do you happen to know if Shriners uses surgical techs?
