I am considering a nursing job at the Medstar in Washington D.C. and was hoping to live somewhere between there and Columbia, MD. Where are some safe and affordable places to live nearby? Does anyone also know how much parking costs at Medstar?

I'm being completely honest here and not trying to turn you away. But DO NOT live in DC. Wayyyyy too unsafe, the crime has skyrocketed. Also, stay away from Prince George's County. It's one of the most dangerous counties outside of Baltimore. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of affordable rent around the area (I live in North Bethesda, Montgomery County). You're looking at easily at least $2000/month for a one-bedroom, even some studios are also that expensive. Gaithersburg and Germantown have become a problem crime-wise. Silver Spring has also gone downhill rather quickly. You could look at Bethesda, which is historically a very safe city with metro train access but again, the cost of living can be nuts (MedStar is on the green train line, which covers Prince George's). The problem around here is that the riffraff troublemakers from DC have been pushed out into the suburbs of Montgomery and Prince George's due to the cost of living. The bordering towns of DC have become over-populated, and the local county police department is understaffed and overworked. If I were you, I would look into Northern Virginia and I know you said MedStar Washington, but look into Virginia Hospital Center, they pay a lot more. Although it's expensive, Arlington is a very safe city and consistently ranked as one of the best in the country. Good luck ?

I left Washington Hospital Center about 6 years ago. For RNs they had an employee parking garage attached to the building that you could park in at night, and some parking lots on the campus that you could park in during the day. I think parking was like $25/month. DC is a major city, and like most major cities and their nearby suburbs, there is crime. There is limited public transportation to WHC, the metro train is a bit away, but there are shuttle busses. And there are metro busses that run to the campus. I live in north silver Spring. neighborhoods are hit and miss. Apartment complexes wil have more crime than homes. I've also worked downtown at GW where the hospital is literally above a metro train station. I currently work in Virginia, the comute is killing me, but I like the job. Good luck on whatever you choose.
