Where to live in Vancouver

Hi to All,

Am moving to Vancouver soon and will be working at St Paul's Hospital.

Would appreciate some advice and info on where to live.

Seems like North Vancouver is a nice place with cheaper rent. Looking for a 2 bedroom in a safe area. Wondering how it's going to be to commute to work-public transport? No family just me initially. Thanks.

Commuting on public transit from North Van to St Pauls could be sorta quick if traffic is not too heavy, but could be a nightmare if the Lions Gate Bridge is backed up. You should probably research rent prices for North Van as well as the West Side of Vancouver (which is "downtown" and much much closer to St Paul's). I'm not sure if it's in walking distance, but pretty close. Even though the West Side rent is probably more than North Van, less commute time and traffic might be worth it. There's also Yaletown, which is downtown, but probably quite expensive, it's a very trendy area.

You would also have to consider what times buses start running from North Van (there's also the Sea Bus accross the water). If you had a shift at 7am, I dont' know if you could make it there at that time. If you were already downtown, you'd be much more able to do early/late shifts. Some friends of mine rented an apt downtown Van and it was in a pretty good area, not a brand new builiding by any stretch, and not OVERLY expensive.

There's also a lot of rental apts around VGH area, (Oak, Cambie, Broadway) area which would be a bus ride (or maybe 2) to downtown and likely less commute than North Van.

Hope this helps :)

Thank you for this helpful info.

Any idea of how much the rents in those are are i.e for 2 bed apartment or 3 bed.

Thanks

Hi Jeff,

I noticed that you posted this awhile ago, but in case you haven't had an answer, I'll comment.

We moved from Vancouver because I wanted to be nearer family in Ontario and the price of just living there was too costly. Don't get me wrong, I loved the city, views, ocean, mountains, etc, etc. We lived in a second floor walk up apartment in the west end; the upper floor of a house. It had 2 bedrooms, was on a noisy street and had a druggie living in the basement apartment that used to do "yard work" at 2 am. Thought he was helping out the owner! This apartment which did not include utilities, cost us $1700 a month. The experience of living in Vancouver was something I'll never forget, but the cost of living, ......

Best,

Sue
