Where to live in PGH while attending Mercy Hospital School of Nursing?

I plan on Moving to Pittsburgh in July. I want to find a decent apartment in a safe neighborhood close to hospital if possible. I know Mercy Hospital parking sucks you have to pay and then be shuttled I guess to the hospital so I would like to be within walking or bus distance. From what ive looked at so far prices near the hospital seem high and apartments are crapy. would it be worth it to live in this area or drive a short distance from another surrounding area?

Oakland and the Southside are close. Of course you realize that the SON is right next to Duquense University, so you might want to look for craigslist apartments close to Duquesne. Keep in mind that Duquesene Boro is NOT the same as Duquense University...DO NOT look for apartments in Duquense Boro. It is a toilet.

I discourage you from getting an apt in the Hill District.

Anything along Bigelow, Baum, Liberty, or Penn Ave should provide a decent bus ride to the hospital.

North and South Oakland are not nice areas to live in. There are no nearby grocery stores; you'll have to catch a bus to the South Side, Squirrel Hill, or Shadyside. The Hill District is a crime ridden neighborhood that's right next door to Oakland, so crime occurs often in Oakland. I know students who like living in Oakland because it's close to campus, but I don't think it's worth it. Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, Friendship, and Highland Park are very nice neighborhoods. A bit pricey, but there are some affordable places plus they're close to public transportation, especially SH and Shadyside.

I think the area of Oakland in front of UPMC looks a little rough 'architectually,' but I would live there if I were a student.

Heck, I worked there, partied there...
