Where to live in CT if working at Yale New Haven?

Published

Hi everyone-

I'm graduating in May and moving to the CT or NY area..I'm interested in Yale New Haven but there is an apartment I really like in Danbury...Does anyone know if this commute is do able? Mapquest says its almost an hour and I dont know how traffic is in the area...Thanks!

Traffic is horrible. Sorry. Trips that might take 15 minutes during the night take more than an hour in the morning, early/mid afternoon, after 3 until it's dark. I would follow the local traffic advisory online for a couple of days to get a feel for what you would face at what ever time you would be travelling. Also, keep in mind the wintery roads slow things down this time of year too. Good Luck

It is not. You would need to take Rt7 (which is always under construction) down to 95N then all the way up to NH. In the am it could take you 35min just to get to 95. If you work in the pm it should take you that 1hr that mapquest said (pending accidents). In the am you going with traffic on Rt7, against on 95. In the pm, against on rt7 and with on 95. I did this commute for 5 yrs.

Just as a tip- Wallingford isnt a bad commute to Yale New Haven. Its a fairly big town with tons of really nice rentals. If interested in Wallingford, there is a nice place called Southwinds (off exit 14). They are nice inside, nice area of town and right near the highway. Just as an FYI.

Thanks for the advice!...the problem is that my boyfriend is working in westchester county ny so the commute has to be decent for both of us. I'm also looking into Danbury hospital and several others in NY so hopefully something works out if Yale isn't an option. Thanks again!

Move to West Haven, CT. It is one town next to New Haven, and there are plenty of rental units down by the water. In the summer there are lots of fairs and events. I lived there 5 years ago and had a huge 2 BR with a giant kitchen for $600/month. I'm sure that's up to $700-$800 by now, but it was the top floor of a house.

Overall it's a great town to live in, and to buy into as well. Every 10 years the next town up the I-95 corridor becomes the new area for NYC'ers to buy into/commute from. In the 80's it was Stamford, 90's Norwalk, and 2000's Bridgeport. Milford it already pricey, so the next town up is West Haven. If you're going to buy in that area near Yale, West Haven is the place.

I live in Danbury and have commuted to Yale-New Haven for clinicals. I always took the back roads (Route 34- it doesn't make sense to take 95) and it was about an hour, and scenic. I would be willing to do it every day if I got a job there, but that's just me.
