Where to go after 6 months of medsurg?

So, maybe some of you read my last thread about being a miserable new grad in med-surg. I live in the Hampton Roads area- Norfolk, Chesapeake, Va Beach, Hampton area in Virginia......

what other positions could I apply for if I do decide to leave med-surg. I am interested in the ER, PACU, and OSDU....I am definitely not a "bedside nurse" I know that for sure.

I'm also interested in working at a clinic, but.....I don't think there's really a need for RN's in the clinic setting.

Basically, my question is....in general, how much med-surg experience do you need to be considered for jobs in the ER, PACU, OSDU (outpt surgical unit), and clinics?

Thank you!!!:wink2:

From my experience (2 months being a nurse for 1 year) I did Med-sug for 6 months then went over to peds. (A whole other story) I am thinking of going to ICU and they said yes, the PACU told me that I need critical care experience and my acls, pals to be better suited then other people who may apply. The ED would take me right away as well. This is in the hospital I work in NJ. Not sure if other states may differ.

Specializes in Adult Acute Care Medicine.

Hi,

I don't think there is a "right" answer.

I am a new nurse and have been in med/surge for 7 months, however several of my classmates were hired directly into ICU and ER positions.

If you really feel the desire to move on quickly, why not update your resume and interview for some positions? Just be honest and express your passion for this other type of nursing career.

Good luck to you! :nuke:

You're still a "bedside nurse" in PACU and ER. Both are considered ICU level floors in a lot of hospitals. Both require a lot of quick patient turnover and thinking on your feet. you should definitely at least look into the clinic route. There are a lot of them out there. I particularly like my HIV clinic rotation in school. I actually thought about working there per diem after graduation!
